A question about : when to open a basic bank account?

Hi All

I was made bankrupt at the courts on the 29th January and have just had my first conversation over the phone with the OR 9th February who says I can open an account.

My only option with regards to basic bank accounts is to go with Barclays but Barclaycard is one of my creditors.

I am assuming that Barclaycard has still not been informed about my BR from the OR as I have had no letters from Barclaycard to say that they are closing my accounts.

So the question is, should I wait for my Barclaycard accounts to be closed first before applying for a basic account as I take it that barclays will close all accounts within their organisation held by myself when notified of my bankruptcy?

Many thanks!

  • You can open a Barclays account any time you wish. Just go in and see an advisor and explain that you need the basic account as you are BR and they will open it for you. There will be no problems with them opening it as they are very forgiving and are BR friendly.
  • Thanks Tigerfeet for your time, but just to confirm.
    ..
If I opened an account today with Barclays but lets say next week Barclaycard begin closing the bad accounts, would this newly opened account not be affected?
    Thanks again!
  • No it won't. This is your post BR everyday living account and Barclays will be happy for your business. They seem to take the long term view that you will probably stay with them when discharged and will want to improve yourself and have more products from them but you will have learnt your lesson and will be much more aware of your money.
  • opened mine today, now thinking maybe i should have waited as payments due to go in Monday :/
  • No need to wait MummyGeorge. You should be fine.It is very sensible to get all your ducks in a row before BR.
