A question about : What West End / London show's have you enjoyed?

I was wondering what people think of the West end show's they have seen.
Last week I went to see 'Blood Brother's', not from choice, had Ј70 of theatre vouchers and at the TKTS office that was what was available then & there.
I was pleasantly surprised!

It's all about personal choice, but it got me thinking about having a thread telling each other what we thought of a show AND if we thought it was good value for money (or not).

Last night I went to see a local production at the 'Theatre Royal' Stratford E15, called ' The Great Extension'.
It wasn't great, bit dated but topical I guess.
Years ago they put on great shows, two come to mind as outstanding 'Steaming' and 'On your way Riley'.
Just Googled them 1981 and 1982............OMG!!!!

I saw (embarrassed to admit title=Embarassed ), 'The Rat Pack' 9 times last time around and have booked to see it, this time round, next Thursday.
Hated 'Phantom of the Opera', my dil favorite of all time

So................What is your 'must see', 'don't see', favorite, best value, recommended show/s?
Have you been surprised/dissapointed by a show you've looked forward to?
LL

  • Hi LilacLillie
I've been to see La Cage Aux Folles 8 times in the last month, but then again from looking at my avatar it's pretty obvious why lol. It is a fantastic show, the cast are great and it's such fun, they all fit together so well.
I also went to see Blood Brothers under duress, but absolutely loved it, my brother was shot and killed 9 years ago and I found it very moving and so well done.
The Lion King, We Will Rock You, Billy Elliott, Chicago and Priscilla are all fabulous and you leave feeling amazing. I watched Grease but found it to be very amateurish and not very good.
I love the west end and the shows are great. A fantastic place to live and so much to do!
    Cheers

  • I dont go anywhere near enough I live in walking distance of Covent garden Im ashamed!
However we got free tickets to the Lion King and totally were blown away with it- would recommend it to anyone- we were v naysayer before we went, amazed when we came out.
OH seems to have a problem with the theatre  seems to think people might question his masculinity if he goes  Anyone experienced this
  • I went to see Hairspray yesterday with 11 year old girl. We had a wonderful time. Very entertaining and certainly feel-good.
  • My DH falls asleep at the Opera.
The only one he stays awake throughout is Madam Butterfly, then moans the last production was a better one.

  • I have seen Hairspray twice and thoroughly recommend it.
I have heard good things about Jersey Boys as well.
  • OH-NO!
What a doughnut I am and you a bearer of such awful news!
At least I won't cry when I get there...................I'm doing that now

  • I'm thinking of taking the kids to Wicked (cheap tickets on lastminute.com). Has anyone seen this show or what would you recommend for kids.
    Thanks
  • Wicked is an abs amazing show. I teach 9 year olds and turned it into the central theme I taught everything around for a whole term. Without exception the class was totally fascinated and desperate to do more with the story. They're now very keen to go to see the show - but I ain't taking them !
My daughter (11) loves the show too - we're going to see it again in Jan for the 3rd time! The cheap seats are fine - we've been in the stalls in the Ј20 seats and could see everything. Next time we're paying more and sitting at the front in the circle - can't wait!!
  • Hi, apologies but can i highjack this thread slightly?
Coming down for a week in november and will want to see "The mousetrap".
Is it best/ necessary to book tickets now online, or can we simply buy at box office on the day?
    Cheers.
ps Of the plays mentioned so far, i would have to see my favorites are Woman in Black, (SO scary!!!) and Blood Brothers.
  • For my 40th, OH and I went to see Joseph when Lee Mead was in it. We had V.I.P. tickets which meant we had our own butler for the evening, a private room (Andrew Lloyd Webbers room at the theatre), champagne and canapes, gift bags and programmes and after met Lee. A birthday never to be forgotten.
  • I'd recommend Mama Mia too.. thoroughly enjoyed it....
  • Loved Les Miserables, We Will Rock You and Miss Saigon (years ago) - was in the 2nd row for Miss Saigon being choked by dry ice but you could see the holes in the girls' stockings and it all added to the atmosphere.
We wanted to book for Dreamboats and Petticoats but a touring version came to a local theatre and I was so glad I hadn't paid silly prices to see it in London. It was diabolical, full of reality show rejects who couldn't act or sing! The second half was definitely better - after a few large glasses of wine during the interval!
  • I think kids would quite like 'Stomp', not the little ones though.
    Maybe from 8 or 9yrs??
Its fun watching and listening to the racket!

  • Think I'd buy tickets in advance after seeing the prices the ticket booths were selling at last weekend.
I only went to use my tokens and thought they were a rip off only aimed at tourists.
I usually buy cheap tickets off lastminute.com and so far never had bad seats.

  • I saw Wicked (a friend bought the ticket) and it was really pretty darn good. I would recommend it for someone with children more, I guess, but the production quality was really high, and the cast very good.
The same weekend I also saw 'Waiting for Godot' with Ian McKellen. Patrick Stewart should have been there as well, but he was ill (*sob*), but it was still the single best piece of theatre I have ever seen: superb stage design, fantastic cast...I don't think it's still on, but if it is and you can go, get thee to the theatre, why woulds't thou watch a play inferior?!
