A question about : What weight is overweight for you

Not counting people with large amounts of muscle/ other circumstances making the BMI calculation unsuitable. Well You can if you want its still interesting to me.

I am really short so would be overweight at only 9 stone! (BMI 25+)
Obese (BMI 30+) at 11 stone
Morbid Obese (BMI 40+) at 14.5 stone
Underweight at 6.5 stone.

Currently I am in the healthy range
What about you?
Do you think being over or underweight makes you spend more money?

Best answers:

  • Anything over 14.5 stone and I take action to reduce. According to the NHS, I am overweight at 14st 11 and I'd need to be nearly 18 stone to be obese.
Wife takes action at 8.5 stone, prefers to be close to 8. Overweight at 11 st (although she would resemble a Michelin woman by then.)
Being overweight probably means we spend less money as we eat less in order to get back down to our preferred weight range.
Edit: All above based on BMI calculated with this NHS tool...

  • Underweight at 8st 9
    Overweight at 11st 11
    Obese at 14st 5
Currently in the healthy range. I don't weigh myself (only know my weight from visiting doctors last week) and I only tell if I've put on weight if my clothes start feeling a bit tight. That's when I know I need to cut the crap food out for awhile..
It all depends on the person really whether they spend more. My weight 2 years ago was classed as underweight but I ate more junk then I do now which I suppose means I spent more money. I eat at stupid times now (thanks job), don't sit down and eat my tea until 10:30 at night which isn't good.
  • To be healthy it says I need to be between 7.13 and 10.11.
I'm currently around 10.4, so edging towards the upper limit and aware that I could lose a few pounds.
I've been 10.11 and heavier before and personally it didn't feel healthy at all. I couldn't imagine ever being 7.13 either though, that seems incredibly low to me but I suppose it does depend on your build and how much muscle you have.
  • Female, 5'7 tall.
    Healthy range: 8st 6 to 11st 6.
I like to be around 9st10 to 10st which makes me a dress size 10. That's my happy weight. I have big bones (I know it's a cliche but I do have broad shoulders and pelvis) and am hour-glass shaped, and below the upper end of 9st I look thin. Collarbones really stand out etc.
I like my food (and wine!) so I watch my calories and do exercise. Five years ago I lost 3 stone to get to my happy weight and then pretty much maintained it (few small ups and downs - I took action if I put on 5-6 lbs).
Last summer I had to give up my running and cycling due to some medical treatment and then got in a funk. By the new year I was up to 11 stone so now I'm back on calorie-counting and want to lose a bit over a stone.
Back on the exercise too and feeling a million times better mentally. When you have to give it up, it's so hard to get back into it but so worth it once you do!
Slightly depressed at how much fitness I've lost in just six months. Having to build up running again using walk/run intervals as I did when I first took it up.
  • I'd spotted this one too. Saw some that measure wrist circumference and some that use elbow breadth. When I'm home with a tape measure I'm going to try both. Will post results.
  • My healthy range is 8st 3 to 11st 2.
My current weight puts me into the obese category
While there's no denying that I'm overweight and I need to shed quite a lot, I do think that being classed as obese when I'm 5'6" and a size 16 is a bit harsh.
  • I don't hold much store by the charts that show how much you should weigh for a given height.
According to those charts, I was seriously underweight from age 14 to 45, as I weighed precisely 7 1/2 stone (5'8"). I returned to that weight without trying within 3 months of giving birth - twice. I ate well, I ate healthily. Gradually from 45 to now (54) I've put on a bit of weight - I guess it happens to most people at this age. I'm now just shy of 9 1/2 stone - still less than I 'should' weigh for my height. I still eat well, I still eat healthily.
Just re-read your OP about spending more money. No - would probably spend less if trying to lose weight (as not buying as much food). I do Pilates once a week, which is Ј5 a time - but I do that to keep fit, not to lose weight.
The most I've ever weighed was 10st 10lbs, when I was pregnant with my youngest (bearing in mind my starting weight of 7 1/2 stone, that was quite an increase!!)
  • My normal range is 7st 6 - 10st 2.
However, I pay no attention to that whatsoever. At 8st 8 I was a size 6-8 and was accused by my mother of being a lollipop head (body too small for my head). My GP insisted on weighing me 3 times on 2 different sets of scales as she thought there was no way I could be the size I was and weigh so much. She then told me I should probably add at least a stone to the BMI guidelines. Turns out she thought about as little of BMI calculations as a health professional as me. I'd be verging on obese now I've put on weight, but I'm still only a size 12 at most.
  • I don't know if I'm honest. I know that I am overweight, it has been quite some time since I've been slim, but in that time my body has matured and I have gained a significant amount of muscle.
My plan at the moment is to drop from just over 80kg down to 75kg and then reassess. I'll probably then look at a body fat percentage instead.
Apparently I should weigh between 52-58kg, we shall see.
  • Im a size 14, Im 11 stones 10 and my BMI is 30.7 which puts me into the obese category. However, Im fit, I lift weights, I do HIIT classes at least 3 times a week and I don't eat junk food.
I think for me, body fat percentage, general fitness and how you look and feel in your clothes is more important than a number on a scale or a BMI figure.
My brother is five foot 10, hes 12 and a half stones and he has a BMI of 25.5 which puts him into the overweight category. Given that hes got a body fat percentage of around 14 per cent, is slim, lifts weights 5 times a week and does and teaches cardio classes as well, calling him overweight is ridiculous, but that's what BMI says he is.
  • If you're asking what the BMi calculator thinks I should weigh 7st 10 to 10st 6.
I'm very much like Pinkteapot with big collarbones and pelvis, I'd look like a bag of bones anything under 9st, the least I have ever weighed in my adult life is 8st2 (and only got that way verging on an eating disorder) , but was still a size 10/12 and skinny, skinny, skinny. I could get away with that in my 20's now I'd just look ill.
The weight that suits me best is around 10 and half stone, so the very top end of my 'ideal' weight.
  • Male, 38yrs old and 5ft 10" in my bare feet.
According to BMI calculations my healthy range is between 9st 3lb and 12st 7lb. At anything under 10st 7lb I look positively skeletal...I'm currently 11st 13lb and I'm constantly being told at work that I need to put weight on. I think I'm about right when I get to around 11st 7lb.
I don't take BMI readings particularly seriously as it doesn't take body shape into account. At best I use it as a very loose indicator. I haven't been 9st 3lb since I was about 10 years old...
  • I'm extra short so my healthy range allegedly is 5st 12lb to 7st 14lb. I'm currently classed as obese and wear size 12-14 clothes (tops are 12 and some of those are baggy, bottoms 14 sadly). I am currently trying to lose weight but aiming for 8stone at the lightest, I am not sure going any lighter is a good idea! Will get there first and then see. In my adult life I don't think I've ever been less than 7 1/2 stone and I was lovely and slim back then.
I really don't like BMI, maybe it works for people of average height only?
  • I *think* BMI only works on the basis of a wide population sample.
It doesn't necessarily work for individuals. But that creates a conundrum for the health profession - they need to advise people and need them to not have excuses to avoid accepting the advice.
    My (5'7" male) BMI range is 8st 6 to 11st 6.
I'm around 10st 7 (varies by 3-4lb) and people say I'm in great shape.
If I hit 9st 7 people would be pushing burgers into my face! At 8st 7 they'd call the medics.
I lost about 1st 3lb over the past 4 years, and people who never saw me at 11st 10 (and therefore have no comparator) now think I'm "skinny" - dropping 2 st to still be within my "BMI" would be an utter nonsense. My absolute bottom wieght would be 10st, at which I'd look like an athlete, but would only be at the mid-point of my BMI.
If you take 1000 men who are all 5' 7", then the range might fit to the range of weights in which they all have healthy bodies, but realistically, some would be seriously underwieght at 9st and some would be seriosuly overwiehgt at 11st.
It's just a statistical device for the measurement of a wide population. Not for individuals.
