A question about : What to wear to the theatre?

Me & my hubby are off to see The Lion King in London on 23rd April for our 2nd Wedding Anniversary. title=Big Its been a good good while since we last went to the theatre but have never been to one in London.

What is the dress code? Do you have to get dressed up? It will be at the lyceum theatre london

Many thanks

  • It's entirely up to you. You'll find all sorts of dress in a theatre these days from jeans and tee-shirt to full DJ. Just check with the Lyceum first to make sure they aren't imposing a dress code on the night you're attending.
  • As its a weekday i'd even more say whatever you like,i go to theatre every few weeks in London smart jeans and top, trainers are fine and you will find its what most people are wearing, and either way no one takes any notice, you wont stick out at all! Also remember you sitting still for nearly 3 hours in a horrible chair.
  • Where what you like, it's very mixed, personally I love an excuse to dress up, hope you love the show just as much as I did, it's fab.
  • Wear whatever you are comfortable in. Having just been on Tuesday night I would say dont wear anything expensive, those seats are minging.
  • theyre grubby and dirty
  • Well, when I saw "the lion king" in NYC I fell asleep ! So I would wear jim jams !!!

  • I'd wear jeans and a jumper. I always get cold in theatres.
  • Sadly people don't tend to wear their best dresses to go to the theatre anymore, so it's a case of whatever you'd like to wear. Some people do dress up, but also the theatre will include tourists who have been traipsing round the capital all day in jeans and t-shirt, as it's more practical.
So it's up to you. You won't look out of place whatever you wear.
I would take a large scarf though, as I too get very cold in theatres!
  • Thanks for this useful thread - I'm going to the lion king tomorrow - first time in a west end theatre and I also hadn't a clue what to wear.
  • Enjoy - I've seen it 3 times!
  • One of my most embarrassing moments was going to a concert in Edinburgh! anyway thought I should have dressed up because it was a Theatre/concert. The two of us were dressed very well (I thought) not too over the top but just nice enough. It was a complete embarrassment, everybody else was soooooooooooo casually dressed in the extreme! Since then I have been to various, plays, concerts and musicals and now dress smart but informal i.e. jeans and blouse/top, trousers/blouse casual wear etc. Went to 'Les Miserable' earlier in the year was totally casual (Linen trousers and top) did not feel an iota of discomfort.
  • I love going to the theatre. I normally wear something like jeans but with a smart top, or I'll wear a dress, but a more smart/casual dress that I would wear everyday rather than formal evening wear type dress.
Whatever you decide you won't feel out of place. Just make sure you'll be comfortable.
