A question about : what don't you miss?

We used to buy evening papers and a sunday paper every week. Cancelled them because of the cost about 6 months ago.

We've just been talking about sunday papers and realised that we don't miss them at all!

All those years we paid for those and delivery charge on top..Aargh. Wish I'd seen the light earlier.

Won't have to give the paperboy an xmas tip either.

What do you not buy any more because of cost and realise now that you never needed it?

Best answers:

  • Good idea for a thread.
I don't miss takeaway food. When I think about how much I used to spend on food, it's scary.
I took another education when I started my financial plan and that was food. For example, Bananas are 63p a KILO in my local Tesco.
I also don't miss being too scared to log in to my online banking. I now WANT to be aware of what I owe, 100% of the time. That is such a different mindset and I'm so grateful for it.
  • I don't miss feeling sick before I go onto my online banking.
I don't miss branded food and I don't miss magazines and newspapers.
  • I also don't miss leaving the office when the weather's not nice, to find a sandwich for lunch. I make one the night before, put it in the fridge and (if someone hasn't already eaten it!!) take it to work with me. I usually end up working through lunch, but that's preferable to spending money in a sandwich shop.
  • Spa treatments/facials/ manicures - haircut twice a year for Ј15 now and that is it
Luxury skin care products, though I accept them as gifts
Anything with a 'designer' label especially children's wear and handbags
(the only clothes I buy that could be considered 'high end' is outdoor and waterproof stuff as I don't like being wet or cold)
    Magazines
Anything from St@rbucks or similar chains
Wine - not stopped entirely but cut down massively, and I look at the price now not just the label
Fancy ready meals and veg in a little bag all chopped up
    Anything from a 'gift shop'.
    Posh Chocolates
Nearly all branded goods from supermarkets.
Upgrades for phone when old one is still working
    Cable TV
Christmas cards - I refuse to buy them as they just go in the bin and I give to charity instead, and I make a massive christmas cake for work colleagues so they are happy.
Hotels for holidays, I prefer caravanning for Ј5 a night.
  • Actually of all the cutbacks I have made in the past few years, my Sunday paper is the thing I miss the most. Getting the news on pc or tv/radio is all very well but I miss reading all the supplementary bits over the week and having the crosswords to ponder over.
What I do not miss is eating out and having my hair coloured at the salon. The rare time when I eat out now I feel so ripped off as it just is not worth it at all. I can colour my hair for approx. 1/10 of the cost of a salon job too and don't have to sit there bored rigid for two hours. I never bought takeaway food anyway as it is generally horrible.
  • I am retired now and I don't miss going out to work one little bit. Especially on the cold snowy freezing morning in winter.
I can afford to run a car, have a couple of holidays a year, eat out at least twice a week.
    Bliss.....
  • The television! Best thing I ever did (ironically)! I can catch up on the iPlayer or similar for anything I really want to see - but I've read more books and gone out for loads of lovely long walks with the dog instead.
Plus which, the other week, my world did not revolve entirely around the fact that some old trout took someone else's Baked Alaska out of a freezer.
  • I make a packed lunch too and on the rare occasion(3x in the past year) that I CBA to make anything out had nothing in I went to the 99p baguette shop. In a past life I used to buy breakfast and lunch every day.
I never buy overpriced coffee in the Costa/Starbucks/cafe Nero etc as it is also crap imo. Instead I use small independent places which are much nicer and cheaper. I always find reading out disappointing somehow and rarely worth the money.
When times were really hard and we had to prioritize we couldn't afford kitchen roll and I really did miss it! so it is back now but used sparingly. Ironing water also went and never came back mainly because it went up extortionately in the meantime.
Don't miss buying dvds or constant clothes shopping everything is much more targeted now.
Funny what you get used to!
  • No I don't miss papers - though I do get one on Saturday for TV listings for hubby - if on my own I'd do away with TV and just watch the odd catch up on iplayer - nothing much on anyway.
Wine - never buy it now and just have the odd bottle given to me at Christmas and birthdays.
Branded foods - gave them all up ages ago.
Not having to worry about decorating choices - someone said today about it would be nice to have money to do or house up - but then I would have to make decisions re kitchens, carpets etc - having no spare cash saves me from that dilemma!
Realising you can be happy with the simple things in life.
Not feeling you have to keep buying more clothes - knowing you have ample for your needs.
  • I do not miss having my hair coloured.
I do not spending lots on junk and now enjoy trying to reuse and recycle more, not totally good at it but am interested.
I don't miss getting a horrible shock on opening my CC bill.
I REALLY don't miss trying to keep up with someone I thought was my friend who bought expensive designer stuff and continually, when I stopped and thought about it made me feel fat and poor. I love my new friends who don't care about brands and shallow nonsense.
I love feeling more in control and looking at my bank balance
In fact I might go and do that now
  • I also don't miss spending 3+ hours in the salon having cut and colour, do it at home and is o much better! Local salon charges Ј12 for excellent cut would never believe it was possible! When I think how much I have spent over the years on what I believed was essential I quake. Mainly don't miss all the things I used to think I needed when in reality my needs are very few, I have everything I need and a far more simpler and enjoyable life.
  • Some great points raised here... I dread to think how things would be now if I hadn't found this forum before things spiralled out of control!!
For me, I don't miss fancy restaurants, overpriced designer clothes etc... Most of all... pretending to be something I'm not!! I'm happiest on the beach, with a picnic, fire and fantastic company!!
These days all my disposable income goes on travel and experiences rather than pointless material things!!
