A question about : Washer dryer

Hey,
I was not sure where to post this and when I saw money saving mums I thought who better to ask.
It's terrible timing but three weeks before Christmas our washing machine has broken. Why it couldn't wait until the January sales I don't know. We would like to get a washer dryer as I have a six month old so getting the clothes dry in the winter is proving hard. I wanted to ask if anyone could recommend any brands or even knows of any good deals about at the moment?
Thanks

  • Welcome, but be aware that with a washer dryer you can only do one load at a time and you may have to take half the load out before starting the drying program. Which means each load takes 2-3 times as long to do before you can put the next wash on.
So it wouldn't have suited me when the boys were young because I usually did 2-3 loads one after another.
If you haven't got room for a separate dryer, can you fit a heated clothes airer in anywhere?
  • I have just bought an indesit washer dryer and very happy with it
  • I've got a Miele washer dryer and love it.
  • I hated mine- it just cooked the clothes!
These appliances always know when the worst time is!
  • I know it's not really the answer to the question but I go to the launderette once a week with all my drying and I use the machines there - I get a ton of it done for about Ј3 (it's 20p for 2 minutes) and I believe that's cheaper than running a machine at home. They're gas dryers so they're piping hot, sometimes the clothes are still warm in the basket the following day. Don't know if the OP has a launderette anywhere near but that's a consideration.
    Jx
  • I was in exactly the same situation as you 4 years ago (had a nearly 6 month old too!) we bought a Miele washer dryer, it's the best I've ever had
Delivery was delayed though due to all that horrendous snow. I ended up going to the launderette with about 6 huge bags of washing and had a service wash done and I think it was Ј20. It was all neatly folded when I went to collect it, I nearly cancelled the Miele
If you can afford it get a Miele...
  • Love my indesit washer dryer.
I had 2 in reuseable nappies and it was a godsend in the winter. My house only had space to dry 1 load at a time, so I could wash 1 load and hang it dry, then wash a 2nd load and tumble dry it.
  • Thanks for all the replies. There is no launderette nearby so the travel would make it too much and my son is unwell at the moment so we will be housebound for the next couple of days. I have had a look at miele ones but they look so expensive! I don't think that is going to be possible unless we cancel Christmas lol. I will look at the indesit ones, I just have to find a good deal now.
  • I bought the Samsung Ecobubble 2 months ago and I'm very happy with it so far. I opted for the 12kg drum which means I can still wash and dry a full load of 9kg without taking any clothes out. Check Quidco for any deals/ cashback on household appliances
  • My advice is to go for the cheapest machine possible and buy and extended warranty, or go for the most expensive one you can afford.
  • My washer dryer kicked the bucket last Saturday, so I'm in the market for one too. The old Hotpoint one is 15 years old, so it's not worth repairing, and many spares are obsolete anyway.
Indesit are one of the most reliable brands on the Which website, but there's not a huge difference between most. I'm teetering on the brink of ordering this one, but's been criticised for being a bit noisy, it's quite old too, so I don't know how much longer the spares will be available for. Which rate this one very highly, but it's a bit steep.
  • I've got a Hotpoint Aqualtis Washer Dryer and it's fab! x
  • I would second getting a separate washer and dryer if you have the space. I used to pull out the clean wash and dry specific items only. The dryer shrunk most of the baby clothes so just as well they were prem. We never use our dryer now. It's obsolete in the garage.
  • I've found the old saying 'you get what you pay for' to be very accurate when it comes to washing machines. I would only consider a Miele or a Bosch. Appliances Online have always offered my great service and very quick delivery.
  • I'm not sure if I'm looking for a washer dryer or just seprete washing machine and dryer but I tried to Take it to the local launderette but it was very expensive at Ј4.50 a go
  • I have a Hoover washer-dryer - it washes well but I don't rate the dryer. It's better than not having a dryer but I preferred having the two machines separate - unfortunately I only have space for 2 applicances and needed a dishwasher.
I also have a Lakeland heated drying rack and I highly recommend this if you have enough clothes generally to be getting on with - it will dry up to 3 loads of washing in about 12 hours (at least that's what I find) which is fine if you're not working on a wash and immediate wear basis.
  • I don't see how washer dryers works as you can't tumble dry a lot of items. I have a new Beko 9kg washing machine bought in sale for Ј299 from the Co-op. I have had all sorts of washing machines that have died on me but Beko go on and on and they are really affordable.
