A question about : War!!!!

Ive finally lost it with the halifax

after a nice (free) night out of the cinemas i returned to an all too familiar envelope and i thought you must be kidding

after twice now doing clearence payments on the account, and twice being told the account was shut down, they have the nerve to send me a a statement for wait for it

1P

one pence!

I am really trying hard to refrain from swearing, and will be phoning them tomorrow to give some poor soul the mouthful of a lifetime (nah i will be polite and explain calmly as shouting gets you nowhere) to get this account finally closed

I will also be making sure trhe student account i closed on saturday is finished off as well, but thats another story

As said in other threads i am gunning for my penalty fees back, and now i am more determined than ever, and will also be chasing up the credit card side of things as well

I hate the halifax, i think they are pathetic and the only positive thing about this is that they have wasted time, money and effort for one pence!

they make me sick

Best answers:

  • I am going to move this to the Vent board as it's not really about getting out of debt, however I understand your frustrations with the Halifax as I used to have accounts with them...please note the past tense
  • It's probably down to a computer. The thing is all these statements etc are computer generated and whether the balance is a plus or a minus, they'll automatically send a statement. I got one for 22p from them one time too. I also got statements from Capital One when the account was in credit by Ј2.00 odd, now closed. It's computer generated bumph. Don't get stressed, it's not worth it.
  • Similar thing happened to me once (not Halifax though) and I was told that if there was ANY positive balance on the account at all, then it would not be completely closed unless you stipulated you wanted to either:
    a) have the funds sent to you
    b) donate them to charity
I only found this out after receiving another statement after the account was supposed to have been closed and phoning to speak to someone higher up than the usual service advisors who answer the phone.
Don't know if all companies have a similar way of working or not though.
  • That's bizarre! On our Natwest Visa, we once had bill of 1p, but they wrote it off as a small amount charge. The stamp would cost more than the bill!
At uni they didn't want to let me register my classes because I owed 10 cents, madness.
  • It may be annoying but what is the alternative .. the money is legitimately yours (albeit 1p) and some people would kick up an awful stink if the bank kept it (saying that it was blatant profiteering or whatever). A while ago banks wanted to shut down many accounts that had not been touched for several years with less than ЈX in them ... there was a national outcry. It costs the bank just as much to asminister an account with 1p in it as it does if there was Ј10K in it - every statement/letter etc. costs at least Ј2.50 (or so - some people claim as much as Ј10).

  • The Halifax are terrible.
I tried opening their student account because NatWest had peed me off (just one of many occasions). It was opened, and I got statements, but never a card, chequebook, paying in book or any of the other things you *kind of need* to run an account.
    Stay well clear.
