A question about : Walking shoes/trainers

I'm currently training to take part in a 26 mile charity walk and need to get new shoes well in advance of the walk.

Most of my walking is on pavement, some grass, no rocky ground.

Would running trainers be good for this type of walking or something more like the sketchers go walk range?

Or would a hill walking type shoe still be best for pavements?

Best answers:

  • I run and hill-walk a fair amount, and I'd probably just use running trainers for this. The important thing is to make sure the trainers fit well and are comfortable. I would look for sturdy trainers designed for high mileage training runs, rather than the really lightweight ones intended for racing.
If mud and bad weather are expected, you might want to consider approach shoes like Scarpa Vortex, but that's probably overkill. I've never tried Skechers shoes, so can't comment.
  • running trainers would be my suggestion - seek advice from a specialist running shop perhaps (and by that I don't mean the likes of Sportsdirect)
  • I went to our local SweatShop when I signed up to do the MoonWalk and they gave great advice on the right sort of shoe for my event.
  • Go ans have a gait analysis so you buy the correct trainer type, I tend to try them on in the shop and buy cheaper online.
  • I do a fair bit of long distance walking and I would personally use cross trainer type walking shoes (like merrells) rather than running trainers. Generally I think they tend to offer better support - possibly because the makers are less interested in making the shoes as light weight. Also, I think they tend to give better grip so are better for walking on grass/trails or in slippery conditions.
