A question about : vacuum cleaner, upright or cylinder?

I am moving in to a flat which is all on one floor and has only hard floors. I will need a new vacuum cleaner.

Which would be best, upright or cylinder? Also is there anything to look for considering I only have hard floors?

A little more extreme, do I need a vacuum cleaner with only hard floors? Could I just sweep up? I also have no pets.

Thanks for any replies!

Best answers:

  • You just need sweep and mop.
vacuum cleaner not necessary for hard floor.
You may want a floor sweeper and steam mop instead...
  • I recently bought a cordless AEG 18v Ergorapido. Never thought I'd say this about a vacuum cleaner but I love it. Perfect for carpets as well as hard floors and it has a handheld bit too. It zooms around with ease and because its cordless you can just grab it quickly as you make a mess rather than have to do all the hoovering in one go.
If you shop around you can get one for about Ј170. I got mine for around that when it was on offer at John Lewis.
  • For all smooth floors such as laminate, vinyl or wood you really need a cylinder vacuum. Upright vacuums with beater bars are for all carpets except loops, which would need a cylinder. The upright is designed with the beater bar to loosen dirt from the pile, so generally they do not have the suction power of a cylinder. The only reason you don't use them on loops is that the bar roughs up the loop and can cause piling.
