Best answers:

  • Ah you missed the days of the old US airbases when you could pick these up relatively cheap.
I have only imported a car once (South Africa) and getting it through it's first MOT was the biggest battle (rear fog lamp). You need to do your research in to what current rules and regs are but I don't think you will find it impossible.
  • There a couple of Ram duallies I see on my way to work so registering them here is definitely possible. Not sure if they are diesels though.
  • You'll need to pay VAT and duty when it's imported, then get a NOVA certificate from HMRC to prove all is paid.
If it's under 10yo, you'll need to get an IVA test on it. If it's over 10yo, an MOT is all that's needed.
Then it's V55/5 from DVLA and a year's tax (no official CO2 figure, so it'll be the same VED as pre-01 vehicles, by engine size), and a little sit-back-and-wait for the paperwork to come through.
  • Not sure if it is still the case but as Hintza mentioned rear fog lamps - my old Camaro (1991 model) had the high level brake light wired up as the fog light, passed 7 MOT's whilst I had it so a cheap "fix" unless regs have changed, I got rid in 2001.
  • It used to be the case that a $50k car would be Ј50k by the time it hit the UK shores.
Then you have the costs of altering the lights etc.
