A question about : Unsolicited Amex card

Hi all,

Amex sent me a credit card in the post which I have not applied for, is this just some kind of marketing move? They seperately sent me a pin. I don't want the card, so can I just ignore it, or do you think I need to do something more?

They must have got my details from the electoral role; initially my surname was spelt wrong on the electoral role, and they've spelt my name the same on the card.

Best answers:

  • I would contact them ASAP, no one is going to send you a credit card as a marketing ploy.
You would by law need to be credit checked and sign and agree a credit agreement. I would be careful of other unkown types of mail
  • Thanks Rich - I thought it was weird but I think I just needed someone else to confirm that this wasn't a commonplace thing!
I've called them now, and the fraud department are going to get back to me.
  • Credit files are worth checking too for other suspicious applications.
  • Yes, I definitely will.
  • seems strange. if someone has tried to obtain a card, fraudulently, in your name...then they haven't done a very good job.
please let us know what you find out.
  • A fraudster did the same (with a Platinum Barclaycard) some years ago and obviously planned to intercept the mail.
Barclays fraud dept were utter tosh. Hope Amex are more on the ball.

  • Just to update on this, Amex were rubbish, as were the post office when I reported mail fraud. Never heard back from either of them It's now happened for a second time with Santander.
  • Did you end up checking your credit files - what did they say? Did any other searches/credit products turn up on there?
    Did you register with CIFAS?
  • With 2 unsolicited cards, you're definitely suffering identiity fraud.
Please check your credit files with the main agencies ASAP. If 2 cards have got through to you, how many more were intercepted and are now on your file, being spent on, without you being aware?
CIFAS is a must, as others have said.
  • Not sure, sounds possible. Wonder if you have any recourse against amex too, at first thought I'd say they've been a little negligent in not acting more thoroughly to follow up on your initial report. They should be experts in this, not you
  • surprised about Amex... i have always found them to be great CS-wise
  • yeah amex c/s is normaly spot on
  • Update: Spoke to both Santander and Amex, Santander are removing the search from my credit record and adding me to CIFAS. Amex confirmed the case had been investigated and closed at the time, and a letter was sent out to me in a blank envelope, so not sure why I never received that. They had also removed the details from my credit record, and apparently added my details to CIFAS too.
Next step is to contact the building manager to see what they can do to prevent this happening again and to other people.
