A question about : Two jobs BR tax code?

Hi there, up until January, I had been working part time (3 days per week) with the local council, and two days per week self employed.

This has now changed, and I now work full time, five days per week with the council. I have cut down on my self employed work now and don't do as much.

I have noticed that although my council pay slip has increased in earnings, as expected with going full time, the tax I am paying seems worryingly high and my tax code is BR.
Is this the right code, and is there anything I need to do?

Thanks in advance.

Best answers:

  • Ring HMRC and tell them so they will change your tax code to the correct one.
  • You need to establish whether you have overpaid, underpaid or paid the correct amount of tax.
Do you have P60s for the previous four tax years?
Do you have a record of your self employed income for those years?

  • If you phone HMRC soon, you should be able to get your tax code altered in time for any refund to be paid via your employer, in your March pay.
If you leave it too late, or your employer doesn't action the code in time, (new tax year in April) any refund due will come directly from HMRC and could take months.
  • Wow lots of posts. I will try and answer what I can.
I have not been self employed for an entire financial year yet. I started self employed conveniently in April 2014. I was made redundant from my second part time job at the time, so went straight to being self employed whilst continuing my job one with the council.
Before I went self employed in April 14, my job 2 tax code was always 944L, job one has always been BR - strange as job one paid more than job two.
Basically, from April 14 to now, I have only had job 1 as a PAYE and have been paying on BR for this employment. Does this mean I owe them money, or they owe me?
In terms of my self employed work, I currently have around Ј15k profit (since April 14), still have a month or so left to earn money, and this is before I take away my costs and fill in my assessment form. I also pay 9% student loan.
Thanks for all of your help, I find numbers really tricky, so all of this is real hard work for me!
  • After holding on the line for 39 minutes, I finally got through to the most miserable and robotic woman I have ever had the misfortune of dealing with in my life. I explained the situation to her and she said she will pass the details onto my employer and I will get a refund for whatever is owed.
Thanks very much for your assistance on this matter guys. I think next time, I will send a recorded letter as trying to ring them is a pain in the backside.
