A question about : Travel agent problem

Hi there

Looking to book a holiday to new york, and checked the prices via an online travel agent, holiday was for myself partner and infant. Put all the criteria in on website and all looks good. Decided to ring up over phone to do actual booking and was told by the agent that the room we had selected wouldn't allow an infant in, even thought the website said it was fine. Agent said they would check with the hotel to see if was fine and get back to us to confirm booking, he asked to take my card details as he couldn't do this without it, I stupidly gave the details, now the deposit has been taken for the room without getting confirmation about infant staying in the room. When ringing up told if needed to cancel would need to pay the cancellation fee. I know I was stupid in giving the card details, but does anyone know where I stand with this? Thanks,

Best answers:

  • You will almost certainly be fine.
    1. Write down exactly what happened. Useful if you need to use 4 below.
    2. Ask the TA for the confirmation needed.
    3. Email or ring the hotel direct.
    4. If still dissatisfied and unable to resolve things use chargeback with your card issuer.
  • Ditto above. Panic not!
Some rooms in New York hotels are small and so a cot might not fit. Wise that a check is being made and often I don't think unusual for credit card details to be exchanged. From the agents view point they might of had to hold the flight seats to secure a particular fare for you, or will want some assurance that you are committed to booking if they go to the trouble of calling the hotel on your behalf to check on the room size.
See what they come back with first before panicking.
Just a final point, the Americans often use the term 'cot' as a third rollaway bed and what we in the UK refer to as a cot is a 'baby crib'. I hope the right request is being conveyed for you.
