A question about : Timing belt changed now loss of power

HI I had the timing belt, water pump and drive belt changed on my peugeot 807 yesterday by a mobile mechanic. Drove for the first time today and there is a severe loss of power at higher speeds and car appears to be drinking more diesel. Car was fine before this work so Im sure it must be connected. Cant get hold of mechanic until tomorrow, but is this a common issue after a timing belt change? if so, what could have happened?

Thanks for any advice

Best answers:

  • Best case, they forgot to tighten an air induction or turbo pipe.
Worst case, they bent the valves by not undoing the vernier pulleys before tightening the belt.
  • The timeing is probably out.
( Not lined up properly when the new belt was fitted)
Get him back to check it.
  • Ok thanks, just to add, theres are no dashboard lights on, or any noise coming from engine, car starts fine also.
  • sounds like pump timing out, reject and ask for it to be done again
  • It is a 2.0, if that makes any difference. The mechanic is supposed to be coming tomorrow, but they havent been very helpful, not returning my calls etc, so i wont hold my breath.
  • It could be they disconnected the battery and reset the ECU, this happened to me, it turned out it was a dirty mass airflow sensor.
  • So mechanic came back out to look at car, and was here for maybe 30 mins, took it for a test drive, he is saying, it cannot be timing belt because, he knows he put it on right and that timing belts cant slip??
He says he thinks it is a ring which needs replacing, he couldnt remember the name of it, but said they often go after a timing belt change and its not his fault. Mechanic said he would be free monday to do it but that i would need to book it through head office.
I am very dubious at this point, and very much regretting using this company, after many many phonecalls today, and broken promises of calls back they finally ring and tell me that it is the crankshaft ring which needs replacing, and that this sometimes happens, they dont know how much the part costs yet, or whether they will be charging us for labour. They cant even tell me when it will be done.
My instinct is to take car to Peugeot (which I should have done to start with) its booked in for monday, they will charge me Ј114 to completely assess what they have done with the timing belt and tell me what the problem is. But I dont want to waste anymore money if this other garage is correct and it is the camshaft ring, does this sound plausible?
  • I never heard of this crankshaft 'ring' thing. Sounds like he got the timing wrong and is waffling. Maybe he didn't use a locking kit when changing the belt and now the timing is out; sounds most likely.
Do let us know the outcome.
  • Quick update, mechanics wanted car back to take apart, were insisting they knew what was wrong (without even looking properly) and said they were having trouble getting part from peugeot, this was probably because part doesnt exist. I was told they couldnt tell me how long they would have car for or how much it would cost us.
I cancelled and took it to peugeot, it turns out it was a turbo vaccum tube had not been put back on after belt was changed. Cost Ј114 for an hours labour, but they valleted the car for free, so I was very happy.
  • Ask your tosser of a mobile mechanic to cough up the Ј114 or you'll sue.
  • Valeted the car for free and your happy. Sorry but thats funny.
They charged you Ј114 for a 10 or 15 minute job and another 10 minutes
    cleaning it.
  • I'm pretty sure means she's happy the car is now sorted, not that the car is now clean. And that she feels, despite it being pricey, she doesn't have to worry any more about potentially being ripped off by the so called mechanic!
As for claiming the money back, difficult as they may say they never had the opportunity to take the car in as they wanted to properly investigate. But op you should certainly push for them to give you the money for sorting it out! Push hard.
