A question about : "Tick" keyboard shortcut??
Is there a keyboard shortcut to insert a tick??? And if so how??
Many thanks,
Lynsey
Best answers:
- hold down the left alt key to the left of the space bar, type 251 on the numeric keypad, and let go of alt.
√
It's not really a tick, but it's the closest you'll get in ascii without having to use a font with an actual tick in it. - Excellent, many thanks.
Does this work on a laptop - no numeric pad??
Lynsey - space bar
click or tab to the "square box" and hit the space bar
simple - Thanks, great tip weegie.geek
- It'll work in nearly every font on every system, as it's the square-root symbol
Use it all the time to check off spreadsheets, on the Mac it's much easier to enter it!
You can find "true" ticks but using a symbol font such as Windings on Windows. - It did not work using Open Office software, I have a laptop too with no number pad, so I guess the numbers across the top do not work with this shortcut??????
- Entering alt codes has to be done by the numeric keypad not the normal numbers at the top of the keyboard. OpenOffice must have a symbol / character map insert tool like Word... have a look through the menus.
Else just add it to a doc on a desktop and copy it over.
Most laptops can spoof a numeric pad but holding down the Function Key (bottom right), turning letters into it, e.g. on my Dell U I O = 4 5 6 with the Fn key pressed... - thanks - same on my laptop too. Will try it
- I've just tried to find it on my macbook in an ordinary text window like the one I'm typing in now.
I held down the left alt button and pressed "v".
Here it is again.

You prompted me to go looking for it.

Loving it.

Can you tell?
Thanks! √
Sonny - Hi,
in Open Office, Writer and Calc, hit insert, special character, change right hand dropdown to mathematical operators, you will find it there.
√ - Fire up the Charachter Map (Accessories/System Tools menu), and you can either read-off the relavent shortcut for every font on your system or simply C&P it.
If you don't have charmap.exe, you can enable via "Add or Remove Windows Components" - A
I think if you use the font marlett and A should also get you a tick in MS Excel but it doesn't work here - ✔ here is a proper tick not a square root symbol you can copy and paste this.
On my mac I had a row of these in the Stickies so I could copy and paste them but I have just found this…
go to edit>substitutions>show substitutions>tick text replacement box and click Text Preferences lozenge>click text at the top>click+>choose a keystroke or combination (I chose alt$ ) and then in the next box paste that nice tick.
Once done in every application that you have checked Text Replacement
and you type alt$ you'll get ✔ remember you have to press space bar after it or it won't change ✔✔✔ - One would hope that the OP would have solved the problem 3 months ago!
