  • Hiya All,
Similar to others, three of us are hoping to go to NY for my Mum's 60th birthday in April. I know it's early days yet, but a rough idea of a budget for flights and for hotels would be great.
It would only be for 7 days, and we don't mind heading out mid-week to keep the price down, but I really don't know where to start. Any advice on flight costs and hotels that are reasonable would be really helpful.
    Thanks for any advice!!

  • Hi guys,
Just wonderng if anyone can give any advice. My brother and I are going to NY next January and would love to catch some of the sporting events on at the time (rangers ice hockey, knicks basketball matches, etc). Does anyone kow any reputable retailers on the net where I can buy tickets?
    Thanks!

  • No I agree, I like to read everything that people have posted. The info on this site was excellent when planning our trip this year. The thread must have been closed down as it was huge, but like here, new ones start. I appreciate the advice given here and use it in conjunction with other sites too.
As you seem a bit of an expert, I posted a query on flights on the 'cheap flights' thread, wonder if you can offer any advice?
    Thanks.
  • expert, probably not... addicted to NYC... definately!!
(i'll respond in the flights thread)
  • Markymoo- maybe you are busy- posted on flights thread but it didn't show up as far as I can see. Time is running out on the BA world sale- any advice appreciated. Thanks
  • christa1... i've replied back in the flights thread, if you have your exact dates, i'll do a bit of flight hunting for you..

  • markymoo- Posted on flights but yet again it's not showing on the thread from the main page. Is hotelcnxtions? the best place to book the cosmo? Seems the best price i can find.
  • Hi Christa - your post is on the NY cheap flights thread here (link also at top of this thread) - is that the one you meant? When you post there, the thread should bump up onto the front page of travel, let me know if this is what you meant...
  • Crabman- yes you are right, my post didn't seem to be showing on the front page of travel from that thread and i was concerned i wouldn't get a reply. I have now so thanks a lot.
  • I've just got back from New York. I booked back in January and paid approx Ј325 each for flights direct from Edinburgh. Stayed in Radio City Apartments https://www.radiocityapts.com/ which was a great location near Times Sq and Broadway (W 49th Street near 7th Avenue). It was also very handy as there was a fridge, cooker, plates, etc. which came in useful. Worked out at just over Ј500 for 5 nights which is pretty reasonable. Feel free to get in touch with any questions.
  • Any one planning a trip to NYC must arrange a Big Apple Greeter its a fantastic service and its free. We spent from 9am til 4pm with our greeter & saw more then, than we did in the other 3 days, www.bigapplegreeter.org/
We stayed at the Fitzpatrick Grand Central Hotel which I can highly recommend and confirm that they definately have the most comfortable beds that I have ever slept in, https://www.fitzpatrickhotels.com/grandcentral/
  • I have never caught a limo from jfk but a friend told me its cheaper to get a limo and not a cab,... but have never seen limos waiting at the airport ? We are 5 adults
has anyone heard of limos at jfk ,I thought u had to order them in advance ?!
    Choccy xx
  • Yes you do have to book a limo in advance. it is against NYC law for any car to pick you up.
for 5 adults, and 5 suitcases, you have to prebook something, as it will be $45 plus toll and tip for a taxi, and i'd say you'd need 2 of these.. (so thats $90, plus $8 toll, and $18 tip min, grand total $116)
carmelcarservice will cost $148 plus tips, so even 2 cabs works out cheaper, and also with a car service, you have to call them and wait outside the terminal, wheras a cab you just walk over to the dispatcher, and off you go (hoping there is no queue)
click on the new york thread at the top of this board, and look at my guide to getting in and around manhattan, and that may answer some questions!
  • I have done this before with 5 people and it was definately better after a long flight. You can normally get your hotel to book it for you and this worked out cheaper than a yellow taxi.
