A question about : Telling the bank about bankruptcy

Hi All

I have been bankrupt since the 29th of Jan and have opened a Barclays basic account a couple of days ago with my OR's knowledge.
My OR said to me that if the bank asks if I have been bankrupt or asks me to sign a form which asks if I have been bankrupt that I should say yes, Which of course is a very sensible thing to do.

However when I was in the bank opening the account, I was never asked about bankruptcy or to sign anything regarding bankruptcy so never said anything, more due to my embarrassment of going bankrupt.

Is it best to go back to the branch and tell them?

Many thanks!

Best answers:

  • If you opened up a Barclays basic account, then no need to as they don't credit check that account and it's bankrupt friendly.
  • Thanks for your lightning reply egrescrimp!
Yes, it is a basic cash card account. I also asked the member of staff not to include online banking or mobile banking as I understand this is not allowed during BR.
I noticed on his computer screen that my three barclaycards that were part of the debt were displayed as Im guessing my name and address would link this info to the new account details.he asked if I have barclaycards which I replied yes,but nothing more was said.
  • They dont look too hard as theres no overdraft facility and you may end up creditworthy and become a "proper" customer
  • Does the cash card account have any fees for usage? i.e. for paying in chqs etc...
  • I got a Barclays A/C a few weeks after I was made bankrupt. Have you been given online banking? That's not available to bankrupts (when they twig...).
It took 2 months for them to twig I was bankrupt, despite my defaulted Barclaycard and the fact I told the woman in branch, and the fact my OR had written them a letter.
Their excuse when they finally twigged 2 months later and cancelled all telephone/internet/mobile banking was "your OR has only just told our bankruptcy team... some ORs send a letter to all the banks... we have no record of you telling us (idiots) and we won't give you online banking back".
Since then I've been in my un-arranged overdraft a few times because I don't trust only having 1 card (I've had terrible 'fraud prevention' problems with them too) so always keep at least Ј100 cash on me.
To their credit (I suppose) they haven't every charged me for being overdrawn, but they've been a right shambles all the way through, and essentially caused it by not letting me keep online banking that I was doing so well with - knowing full well what had and had not been debited from the account.
Also the 'packs' the woman spent so long talking about were taken away when they realised I was BR - leaving me uninsured and with no breakdown cover etc
I knew full well I shouldn't have online banking - and was basically trying my luck - but for them to then remove it and make my banking situation worse (had perfect account management until they hauled it off me) seems a bit perverse, I just get 'computer says no' whenever I complain. I've had 2 bottles of wine and some chocolate from them though.
So if you currently have, and rely on, online banking, be very careful if you leave a low balance in the account and it gets taken off you.
Petrol & Pay at pump is a right pain - having used credit cards before the fact they only Auth Ј1 didn't matter to me, but now it does!
Discharge can't come soon enough, I can't wait to go back to the Co-Op. As you've only been BR since Jan, I'd expect the OR hasn't sent the blanket letter to all banks yet - it took 2 months (according to Barclays) for mine to do so (despite the fact they knew all about the account), so be cafeful.
Best of luck with everything though
