A question about : tax rebate

Hi

When we filled in our end of yr accounts just before the cut off 31/01/15 it said i had paid too much tax and could claim it back. I filled in the section with my bank details as I thought it said it would repay it straight to my account. It's now just over two weeks and no sign. My OH says it will come in with my wages next time but I thought it said it would go to my account. Any ideas please?

Best answers:

  • It will go to your bank account but your return is one of many being processed at the present time.
I would leave it at least a month.
  • Small amounts come in very quickly; larger amounts may be held for 'security checks'. Very small amounts may be held until the following year.
In addition to giving bank details, did you definitely tick the box for getting a bank transfer and not the box for refund via PAYE?
  • My other half does the forms I just put in my bank details. When I log back in it says there is money available for repayment so I filled that in as well. Can you go back and see what he ticked?
  • 28 days or so is about the norm. One of the reasons not to deadline chase right up to 31 January is that a wall of data - over 40% of 13-14 returns - has just been thrown at HMRC. So what is normally 28 days can easily end up being 50 or more. For once I have some sympathy with HMRC, most deadline chasers could have easily filed many months earlier so tough luck if refunds are held up.
Note that in my experience "security checks" is HMRC code for what the rest of us call "deliberate and cynical slow pay". You are entitled to ask what aspects they are checking, and do not be fobbed off by poor quality answers. I have had a few of these for clients where probing questions on my part and a clear intent not to give up resulted in the HMRC person on the phone getting their manager to release the funds on the spot.
  • Thank you. My partner does both his and mine as well as the partnership one it's always done at the very last minute, with lots of shouting the the computer is absolutely useless.
He wants to do a paper one as that is easier but never does them on time and needs to ring to ask for paper forms to be sent out but doesn't, it's always always my fault that I have or have not done something or anything.
I try to stay out of the house as much as possible at the time.
  • HMRC encourages online submissions, and I think that they are much easier than the old paper ones.
I keep records throughout the year, so completing the return is just a matter of transferring figures. I also estimate how much tax I must pay - or get refunded. I usually get it over with in October as leaving it to the last minute is not good practice.
