A question about : Tax code based on income of over Ј27000

I am retired and received a tax code today which included my state pension plus an occupational pension. Another occupational pension was not included. Even so it says that this code is assuming your income is above Ј27000 per year, which it certainly is not. It is about Ј15000. Two years ago when I retired, aged 73, I gave the tax office my P45 and information about my new occupational pension immediately in the September, the following April, I was told that I had made an underpayment of over Ј300. They said I had to pay it back. I had bent over backwards to give them the correct information on time. So I wrote to them but was told that it was my job to check I was paying the correct tax. This was by a snotty young man called Oliver. The only concession they made was that I could pay it back over two years. Just wondering where this Ј27000 is coming from. Can anyone throw light on this please?

  • I would recommend that you talk to Tax Help For Older People https://www.taxvol.org.uk/our-service...dvice-service/ who help sort out tax issues for those over 60 and with an income of less than Ј20,000. It's a free service.
They have helped two of my family members who had been trying to sort out complicated issues for nearly 2 years, and did so quickly with the minimum of fuss.

  • Thank you all for advice I have taken all the information and will use it. My other occupational pension is taxed in Edinburgh and I live in Liverpool. They have known about this pension for years though and it was included even when I was employed.
