A question about : Talk Talk or not

I have had my internet and landline with Virgin Media for some years now with no problems, but have just had a letter from them to say my package has been taken over by Talk Talk (or will be next month - 2 March). They have promised me the same as Virgin which should be Ј40.20 per month for unlimited broadband and unlimited anytime calls to UK landlines. Whilst this seems alright, I have heard bad reviews about Talk Talk and wonder if anyone has any comments, good or bad. I have my TV with Freeview.

Best answers:

  • You seldom read of people writing reviews in praise of good service, but plenty who get bad service from a company and want to let off steam.
The larger the customer base, the more customers are going to find something to complain about - it's just the law of averages.
If you dig around you will find irate complaints from customers of Sky, BT, Virgin and all the others.
TalkTalk did go through a bad patch about 10 years ago when they were expanding at a phenomenal rate and did not have the back up service to deal with problems. But those days are far behind them now - they just get the same rate of complaints as other ISPs of similar size. After all, the actual delivery of the signal to you is done by Openreach who service all the ISPs.
I suggest not to worry until after you have sampled the goods.
  • I became a TalkTalk customer when they swallowed up Tiscali, and have survived the ordeal. I find the service acceptable.
When you have had a few months with them, you may find that you need to change from the "legacy" tariff you inherit form Virgin to one of TT's own native tariffs.
Like you I use Freeview TV and don't want to take TT's TV package, so I have their "Simply Broadband" with the "Anytime UK calls" phone boost.
You will find that TT will cut you a good discount on their own tariffs if you agree an 18 month commitment with them. Their "loyalty" team are highly focused on getting that 18 month commitment.
  • I found them awful. My BB was always dropping out, i couldnt ever speak to anyone, was constantly under or over charged, and when i came to end my contract with them they took ages to send my MAC code.
  • TALK TALK ,for almost 2 yrs !so far no problems and great value for money, previously with BT no better service but very very expensive .
  • Have TT been on watchdog more than the other providers?
I had to contact them about a users account, They couldnt get online and had already been in touch with the customer support (haha).
They were waiting for a new modem/router to arrive when i visited,
It turned out they had received a dodgy email which they never opened. But somehow due to that email their account password had been disabled.
Utterly stupid. Took me ages to get to the right people to reset the password.
  • I swapped from Sky to TT about three years ago. The broadband is faster and more reliable (SKY were sharing the BT equipment whereas TT had their own) both of them were using the BT lines between the exchange and my house which is about 5 miles so I get the best that anyone can where I live.
I get a reasonable deal with TT, pay the line rental up front and get a discount and, if I pay the monthly bill within 24 hours of the notification, I get 10% off that as well (was 15% but it was reduced just before Xmas).
I've only had to talk to them once about reducing my cost, which they did and I got a shiny new router as well so I've no complaints about their service.
  • OP -Just note that TalkTalk are getting shot of any customers (inc any recent Tesco or Virgin National customers) if they aren't on a fully unbundled TT exchange.
They are moving them to an ISP called Fleur Telecom. Check to see if your exchange is unbundled using Samknows website:-https://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange_search
  • bad,bad company.Lost my broadband last week and booked a engineer for Saturday, didn't show up so phoned t/t who rescheduled engineer for Monday a.m.Again no show so phoned t/t who said there was no record of a engineer booked for Monday?Re-booked for 18th Feb' so phoned tonight to make sure it was definetly booked as didn't want to waste another day and was asked why engineer hadn't repaired fault on Monday!!!In other words they are liars which is a MASSIVE no no for me,will be changing suppliers asap.
  • When I moved into my new flat there was already a talk talk line installed. I signed up with much misgiving, seeing as a friend had them years ago and could only ever get online at about 3 a.m. But it's been fine. I notice no difference between my connection down a landline and the one I had before via Virgin cable, but then I don't stream loads of videos.
I suspect their customer service is pretty lousy if things go wrong, but have no evidence to back that up. I still lament the passing of Be.
  • Been with Tt since they bought out the dreaded AOL... Which, incidentally I never had any problems with.. And so far no problem with TT... Hth loopy_lass
  • I went from BT to TT in June last year. By August, I was back with BT. Reason? I preferred to have access to Broadband at all times, not the intermittent service TT seemed to provide.
  • Talk talk = awful
My internet kept dropping, I had no wifi at home and customer services said it must have been something I had done/changed
Changed to plusnet and have had no problems since, plus their call centre is based in Leeds, much easier to get a hold of and discuss anything with.
  • We have the TalkTalk line / broadband / TV. No problems at all ... not sure who can do the same package for less money!?
  • TT spent a huge amount of time and effort in my village promoting the fact that they could offer FTTC BB with speeds of 88mb/s. They signed-up 100+ customers.
A year on, the customer base has dropped to single figures due to the speed only getting above 40mb/s in the early hours of the morning.
Meanwhile, Sky were advertising the same service with a more realistic 44Mb/s, which in reality turned-out to be around 45Mb/s.
  • Been great for me. Odd problem but so what they always admit it and cough up compen.
Nobody comes close to their price deals.
