A question about : Tablet (computer) allowed in Ryanair hold luggage?

I'm due to fly Ryanair Birmingham to Dublin tomorrow lunchtime and have been asked to purchase a Hudl 2 tablet for a family member to bring with me (unavailable in Ireland apparently).

Bought it but then started wondering about luggage restrictions as my hand baggage is going to be pretty tight anyway (before I start filling my pockets admittedly).

Are you allowed to transport an (unopened/sealed) tablet in HOLD/CHECKED baggage or must it be carry-on & fully charged/testable? I'd rather be able to hand it over new/unopened if possible but if I have to charge / demonstrate it in hand baggage then I'll have to sort it tonight.

(I've already got a mass of laptop/iPad/photo gear going in hand baggage as it is!).

Any pointers appreciated!

Best answers:

  • You can stick it in hold baggage no problem. If in hand baggage, you'd have to take the box out as it went through the scanner, as they can't x-ray through them properly.
  • Cracking! Thanks for the prompt reply!
  • But remember that expensive electrical items have been known to 'go missing' from hold luggage
  • You can do it but be aware that if there's any damage or theft during transit, the airline will not take responsibility.
  • I brought a new iPad back from the U.S. in an unopened box in hand luggage. (Bought it on way to airport from Apple Shop so had receipt, but was not asked for). The U.S. security is pretty thorough and it went through the scanner no problem.
  • What is your plan if you do put this item in your hold luggage and it goes missing?
Will you expect your relative to pay for it or will you stand the loss?
If it were me, I'd be thinking about what other items I can put in my hold luggage instead of tempting fate by putting a brand-new electronic item in a case that was going to be separated from me for some time and handled by numerous people.
  • Put the box in your hold luggage, put the hudl in your pocket.
Put two small strong cable ties where the padlock goes,on your hold luggage,as the baggage handlers dont have a key for them.
  • No insurance company would pay out for an expensive item that goes missing from checked luggage, and the airline would not take responsibility.
Why not arrange for your relative to buy it mail-order?
  • As an aside I'd open it up and check it out before going to make sure it's 100% in order. Otherwise you may be bringing it back with you!
