A question about : Stop Dodgy Online Product Reviews (Argos)

I have very nearly been duped by what appear to be dodgy online reviews from Argos. The following email to them explains:
re. Argos item 333/4807
I've just looked at buying the above helmet for 9 year old Son. Seeing the great reviews I was going to order it on-line but, because it's important that a helmet fits correctly, I took my Son to the nearby Bolton store to try it. I'm glad I did because the reviews and product description are dangerously misleading.
This product says it fits sizes between 54 and 58 (a wide size range) and has 5* reviews from people saying it fits children from 3yrs to 14yrs.
When we tried it on we found it has no head size adjustment at all (chin strap yes, head size no) and it was huge on my Son (who has just outgrown an 'up to 54' size helmet). Without head size adjustment, this helmet is suitable for only one head size and certainly not for a size range as wide as 54 - 58 cm.
The review that states that it fits a 3 year old is very very worrying - if it's true.
And this is the reason I'm writing. The reviews are so inaccurate, when I returned home I tried to add my own for this product to give a more realistic appraisal. I couldn't. There was nowhere, even when logged-in, that I could submit a review.
Which leads me to the conclusion that the reviews on your site are fictitious advertising statements and not reviews by customers at all.

In the case of safety equipment for children, this is frighteningly irresponsible.

Please advise me -
Why is your product information for this item so inaccurate?
Why are the reviews featured so at odds with the reality of the product?
Why have I been unable to leave a more objective review of this product?

Regards...

I'll post their reply when I get it.

Is anyone else concerned that reviews have turned into cynical marketing ploys? I notice that on many sites (including Amazon), good reviews are usually at the front of the list. Poor reviews are right at the back...title=Mad

  • You are sent a link to leave a review if you order online.

No Amazon reviews always have one good review and one bad review right at the top of the reviews.
I believe half the reviews as most i think are people who have something to do with the item being sold.
  • Peoples head sizes vary. My Niece has 2 daughters that are just over a year apart. The younger one is only a mm smaller than the older one.
My FIL although smaller than me in height and frame has a fatter head.
Argos reviews are crap though. Looking for an iron some time back. One review saying how light it is and another that its really heavy.
Err which one is it? Light or Heavy?
