A question about : Stolen CC Details!

Hi all,

I've just got off the phone from Nationwide who told me my card has been used to attempt to buy Ј400 worth of goods online from Target.com, plus something called Sherman Oaks, AND they even got themselves some McDonalds with it.

I don't have to pay for any of it, and my cards been cancelled, but I'm now very concerned about how they got my details in the first place, and whether or not I should be concerned about my debit card details also being stolen.

Any suggestions on how I can investigate this / what I should do to keep my debit details safe?

Thanks!!!

  • Sounds like Nationwide are dealing with this efficiently and appropriately so, assuming you don't do anything negligent with your cards, then (a) there's nothing to worry about and (b) if something similar happened with your debit card then it should be resolved in the same way.
No need to concern yourself with investigating it, Nationwide will take care of all that if they feel it's worth the effort.
In terms of keeping your details safe, there's advice at sites like https://www.actionfraud.police.uk/sup...elf-from-fraud but it's just common sense really.
  • The same thing happened to my debit card a few weeks ago, I think they must have either got it off an online site I have bought from or a cash point, if you're worried that you may have used your debit card in the same dodgy/hacked machine or website the best thing to do would be ring your bank and ask for a new card.
  • This isn't really a preventative tip, but something I do periodically is to do a few Google searches for my DC & CC details, along with other info such as security questions, passwords I've set up and my home address.
I do this because sometimes hackers will happily put hacked info in places like pastebin.com where they basically copy and paste vast quantities of private info in a place for all to see and subsequently use.
Only happened to me once, several years ago, but I was shocked to find my CC and related info online for anyone to see and make use of.
  • you searched online for your personal data. Which is actually giving your data away?
