A question about : Starting out in the Tax advising business

Hi there,

I hope this is the right place to ask a couple of questions about starting out in the tax advising business.

I'm currently working full-time but would really like to work as a self-employed Bookkeeper, i am in the process of becoming a member of the IAB and in turn a Registered Bookkeeper. I'm aiming to target my services at self-employed people and SME's within the transport industry. Part of the service i wish to provide is the completion of self-assessment's for my customers - My question is do i need any formal qualifications to do this? If i do where, who with, how much?

Thank you all in advance for your help

Best answers:

  • as far as I am aware (or when I last checked) any body can offer tax and accountancy services.
of course, you may wish for a formal qualification for expertise reasons as well as for marketing your services.
ACT or BPP offer courses in book keeping and tax etc.
  • If you need any training the Inland Revenue hold free training courses on all aspects of paye and self assessment.
If you ring your local office and ask for the Business Support team and tell them you are soon starting up in business.
If you can't get through ring the national helpline 0845 60 70 143.
