A question about : SOUTH WEST WATER Increse

I am struggling to write this i am so angry, South West water have just announced that they will be increasing their charges by 8%!!! We already pay the highest bills in the country, but they are really taking the 'michael' now.

We can choose all out other utilities, but not water...............and as we cannot manage without water, we are suck with them It is OUTRAGEOUS

Best answers:

  • Have you got a meter? If not get one and then use water efficiently and you should pay considerably less.
  • Backontrack. Thanks for your patronizingcomment. I already have a water meter, I am ALSO careful with my water usage.
My usage is approx 10 cubic metre's a month for which I pay approx Ј35 per month
    Its DISGUSTING
  • Yes south west water are very expensive and you don't have a choice of supplier however because of this water companies do not set their own prices they are controlled by Ofwat. Increases in price are very much linked to the investment required for the water and sewerage network and is not just money in the pocket of water company shareholders.
  • Gothicfairy.......... I wonder just how much YOU pay for water? why should the South West have to pay for the upkeep of the coast line for the thousands of people who visit every year.
As for your remarks about :
[QUOTE=Gothicfairy;4 how can Ј35 per month for fresh, safe , clean running water 24/7 be DISGUSTING ?
it might be high but how much would it cost for you to buy all your water from the superstore?
How about all the people who die daily from lack of clean water ?
I won't even bother to reply, apart from saying, you try existing on a very small pension
  • I exist without JSA, a job or ANY benefits..I am losing my house in 3 weeks and will be living without running water etc so I am 100% sure you are doing better then me.
So I won't bother replying to the rest as I think you are doing slightly better then me and I wasn't quite so rude either.

Possibly because the South West depends on tourism for much of it's income and employment, and those tourists are likely to be less keen to visit if they have to swim about in sewage?
I grew up there in the 70's, and at that time most coastal towns simply discharged their sewage straight into the sea, with maceration being the only treatment given. Virtually every sewage works in the region has now got proper secondary treatment facilities, but of course this does not come cheap.
SWW is the most expensive in the country, but at Ј1.15 a day for clean water and waste removal, it's still good value.
I'm willing to bet that many people would spend far more than that on things like subscription TV and think nothing of it.
  • OP, according to the SWW website, the increase in overall charges that OFWAT have agreed for 2010/11 is 1.4%. The highest increase will be on unmetered accounts, as you would expect, so as you are on a meter the increase in water charges (i.e. excuding sewerage charges) should be less than 1%. Please can you confirm where you got the information about an 8% increase?
  • That BBC article say 'up to' 8.1%. It does not say that that will be the average increase. According to the figs on the SWW website, the increase will be heavily weighted to non-metered customers (around 4%), but metered customers will pay more like 1%. The BBC have simply grabbed 8.1% as it makes for a better shock headline.
With inflation at 4%, that is standing still.
  • Also when the water companies supply their figures for the press they are allowed to state "up to XX" as that will be a rise for RV, one for metered and one for commercial so overall it might well be 8% but that is split between more types of billing and customers.
I am not going to go to much into the op's issue as that would just waste my time and yours reading it but 10 CM (cubic meters) per month is not going to be one person unless there is a problem or high usage and don't forget that there are standing charges added etc.
I stick by my earlier post though and agree with Macman, for clean water just over a quid a day is not half bad..try getting that with superstore bottled stuff
  • If it makes you feel any better (I doubt it) I'm also with SWW and we have high water usage (2 kids, one of which disabled and wets the bed). I just paid up my water (missed the last bill): over Ј400
ETA: That is despite being careful with water - honestly! There are some houses in the village that are not metered (ex council, can't be metered as they have shared supply) and I am jealous when I see them watering the garden, washing the car, etc.
