A question about : Slimming World

  • I've been doing Slimming World since the end of July and have lost nearly 2.5 stones.
They've changed from red and green to Extra Easy, which roughly means that you can eat lean meat, fish, carbs, veg and fruit, as much as you want, as long as a third of your plate is vegetables or fruit. There are exceptions, but that's the jist of it. You then choose extras, which you get an allowance of 'syns' each day to use.
There is a joining fee but there are regularly offers in magazines, which give you the joining fee for free.
It costs Ј4.95 per week, if you don't find a voucher for free joining, then it would cost a total of Ј9.95 on your first night. You get given a joining pack and a talk about how the plan works.
Your Dad might be able to get referred by his GP, which can give 3 month's free membership I think. Here's some information on that:

I'd say give it a good 4 weeks before deciding that it's not for you, it can seem confusing initially but once you get the hang of it, you should be able to lose fairly regularly.
  • I joined in May of last year and am now FIVE STONE lighter than the day I joined.
I feel like I've never eaten so much and still lost weight every week (except once, two weeks ago when I made the conscious choice to chomp on Wagon Wheels and Christmas leftovers when I had a chest infection!!).
There is usually an offer in one or other of the magazines (currently Best, or Bella, I think!) where you don't have to pay the joining fee. The weekly fee is Ј4.95 and you get six weeks "holiday" a year where, so long as you tell them beforehand, you can miss the week and not have to pay. If you simply don't attend, you pay for two weeks the next week when you go back.
They have just issued a new pack and have done away with red and green days, it's just one simple system now. You basically have unlimited "free" food, which is fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, rice, pasta etc... and Healthy A and B foods, which are measured portions and represent your dairy and bread type intake.
I promise you - and I am simply a member, not a Consultant or anything I SWEAR - if you follow it properly, stay to the meetings and listen to both your leader and things other people in the group have found useful, or use for trigger moments or to keep them on track - you WILL lose weight.
They also note that an important part of a healthy lifestyle involves exercise (they call it Body Magic) and encourage you to follow this too.
I personally have found that planning my week's meals has worked best for me. It helps that I KNOW what I'm having, it helps me ONLY shop for the things I need to make those meals and it stops me picking at things because I know that soon I'll be having Shepherd's Pie or whatever rather than thinking, "I don't know what I'm having for tea and I'm hungry now"...
Good luck if you decide to go but remember, the Plan is given to you, YOU have to be the one to stick to it!!
  • You can still lose weight, even if you can't up your exercise to start with. I didn't change my activity levels really for the first 2 stone. I'm now working on the exercise and am finding it is easier now I'm a bit lighter. Good luck to both you and your Dad.
  • I wish you and your dad the best of luck. I will say again, the Plan WORKS if you follow it properly. At first the thing is getting your head around regular, healthy eating and planning your meals. After a while it becomes habit. Whilst browsing on the net now, I am also looking at recipes that will use up what I have in my freezer and cupboards and writing the shopping list for the "balance" ingredients I need to make the meals.
I would also stress the "staying to meetings" line. I know some leaders are better than others but mine is fabulous. Shes REAL, she knows that we all have weeks where it's a real struggle, where despite our best intentions, we really find keeping the motivation high extremely difficult. She soothes this with a mix of advice, humour and reminding us why we are there, what we hope to achieve and how we'll feel when we get there. It's quite a big group (no pun intended!) and many of us have had difficult weeks or found a snack that helps us cope with that mid morning/8pm craving that could otherwise break our otherwise on-Plan week. We swap recipes, tips, information and most groups have their own Facebook page where you can talk to each other, if that's your thing.
Going with a family member is also great motivation because you can back the other up when you're finding it more difficult. Keep telling each other how different life will be as you become more healthy, how - hopefully - your pain will start to ease and your body will thank you for the good, nutritious, balanced food you are giving it to help fight your physical problems.
I know I'm banging on but I am verging on evangelical about what Slimming World has done for me. I've been overweight most of my life and this last year has utterly changed me. I'm even thinking about becoming a Consultant when I get to my target weight so I can give to others what this has given to me.
You CAN do this! Best of luck!
  • Exercise and I just don't go together and I needed to shift 2 stone 8lb to get where I wanted to be. I joined in early March and hit target late October. I found it really easy, just don't go at it half hearted, go for it and the weight just seems to fall off. I'm a pasta monster so it was nice not to have to weigh it out or feel guilty for eating it!
I swapped groups after a couple of months because the first leader I encountered was a miserable cow. The second one was lovely and always made me feel very welcome.
    Good luck!
  • There's a voucher in this week's Reveal magazine for free membership of Slimming World. Should be worth buying one of these to save the Ј4.95 joining fee.
  • It's one of the cheapest slimming group's on the market!
You can also prebuy 'countdowns' and get a meeting free which is a great incentive and help with finances in prepaying so your not needing to find near on a fiver each week!
I absolutely love it, we get free tea and coffee at our meeting and so I quite miss when I don't get to stay to group which isn't often, it has been a therapy of sorts that's for sure!
Oh and it works! Though I am slow it has taken me nearly 6 months to lose a stone and half but I love the science and oomph to make meals from fresh and have your plate full, never in judgement or alone
I would only sway between this and what were rosemary conley classes, brought to you by real people x
