A question about : Sky Cancellation

I'm struggling to find information on this, I was hoping someone here might know.

I am looking at switching Sky to Virgin. Long story short, up to 40mb has turned in to 15mb due to line degradation. I can only get up to 40mb on the BT infrastructure so moving ISP's that use BT's networks is pointless. I'm also finding Sky a bit pricey for what we are getting.

The plan is to take the up to 152mb which is available in my area (of course I doubt I will get anywhere near that, but it'll probably surpass the up to 40mb I'm on and most definitely surpass the 15mb down speed I'm getting). It also includes TV and comes out at around the same price as we are on now with Sky for the first 12 months, if not a little bit more expensive, but it actually seems like a better deal overall.

Now, the issue. I moved in to a new house in August last year, however I have now been with Sky since September 2013. When I moved, I had the chance to upgrade to the up to 40mb fiber else I'd be getting up to 4mb on the copper lines. Of course, I took them up on it as 4mb would feel like I was stuck back in 2005 - this was presented as a new order as I was also taking TV with me.

My question is, can I not cancel the Fiber line until August when the 12 months runs up due it being a new order, meaning my 12 months cancellation restarts from the date I moved, or does it run from the time I first got a broadband, phone and TV line, back in Sept 2013 and it is counted as an ongoing service? I don't fancy paying to end the contract so I may have to wait it out if I cannot cancel, however If I can cancel without paying out the nose, I will get it done asap.

Thanks in advance.

  • I think you are rather missing the point that Virgin runs on fibre optic cables and not copper wiring so there is less variance ......
Frankly though if you are consistently getting less than the quoted estimates it may be as much to do with your set up (using extension cables, extension sockets, old filters etc) as bad luck unless you have consistently lived in very rural areas.
