A question about : Sky advice needed

Hi All

Basically due to cut backs and trying to save money my girlfriend has cancelled sky and we now just have the box with no record function.

I have 2 things I would like to know:

1) We have been given a Talk Talk box which can record freeview channels but the input is a plug rather than the same aerial that goes into the sky plus hd box- is it possible to put a plug onto the aerial lead so it will fit the talktalk box?

2) As the sky account was in my girlfriends name, is it possible I can call up and buy sky as a new customer in my name?

Thanks

  • 1) You're talking about plugging a freeview box into a satellite dish, so no. You need to plug that TalkTalk Freeview box into an aerial. And for the on-demand stuff, your router. You can't record Sky without paying them at least Ј10 per month, regardless of equipment.
    2) Don't know, you haven't got the same sirname, but they might get a bit suspicious about a cancellation and start at the same address so quickly. You should really have haggled them down if you wanted to keep them.
For budgeting reasons, if you've got an aerial, why not give Freeview a go?
  • If you don't have an aerial then you can at least continue to use the Sky box for the free channels.
Note that these are not the same as on Freeview, slight differences in channel line up
  • Thanks both,
Yes I know we will receive the freeview bits on the sky box, we just wanted to be able to record on the box as its very rare we get a chance to sit down and watch tv together...
  • If your girlfriend logs into her Sky account, if it is still active, she may see an offer there for 50% off any package, for 12 months. I closed my sky subscription a couple of months ago but then signed up again for "half price" Variety and Sports (Ј26.25 a month, when I saw the offer on My Sky.
  • Are you sure you don't have an aerial socket in your wall somewhere? It's a white socket with a small round plug in the middle, a bit like on the back of your talktalk box.
It'd be quite unusual for a home not to have one, is there an aerial on the roof/in the loft?
  • To summarize:
If you want to watch Freesat channels, you need a satellite dish and a receiving box (Sky)or a, quite rare, Freesat enabled tv, but if you want to record them , you have to either pay Sky a monthly fee or buy a PVR, making sure it works with Freesat and not Freeview (as the Talk Talk box does).
If you want to view Freeview channels, you need an aerial (be it on the roof, in the loft or a table top one). Also you need a Freeview enabled tv or a basic Freeview set top box. To record Freeview you need a Freeview PVR (not Freesat).
  • Yup, you'll need to spend to get to record TV. Either buy an aerial for your TT box, or a Freesat box to plug into the satellite dish. I assume you have TWO cables from your dish, which would have allowed you to record 2 things at the same time on Sky, and will do exactly the same on Freesat. Goto the Humax Direct store, and look for manager's specials, or even cheaper, Humax Foxsat HDRs will be way under Ј100 by now. A 'Freetime' box would be best though to include on-demand content.
Moneyineptitude - I think wiogs was right to clarify that Freeview comes through an aerial. There are subtle differences between the channel line ups on each platform, but that might be important to whoever is asking the question. wiogs didn't complicate it, the system is complicated!
