A question about : Shaving Money Saving Ideas

So we all know the high cost of cartridge razors is pretty high and recently I have just got back in to double-edge shaving.
With blades less than 3p per unit, it seems like a pretty good step. However the creams and soaps can get really expensive but the smart price shaving foam is alright.

Some people suggest the Mach 3 is better than their 5-blade fusion, although it's been so long since I used either I can't remember.

Anyone else had any thoughts on this?

Best answers:

  • I find that the 5 blade fusion are the best out of all the 5 blade range as they last longest and have less pull.
On the 3 blade race theres not to much difference and i go for the aldi ones.
What I do is if I'm doing something special like a meal out, a wedding, going away. I use the fusion as it gives me a better smooth finish. and day to day for work ect I use the cheaper one.
  • How are you finding the double edge???
  • Double edge is great.
Blades are so cheap (about 10 p per one), which I could make last just under a week, but at that price I am happy to change every few days.
Razors, well, I bought an expensive one (Ј40 odd) but is considered the third best in it's class (a Gillette Super Adjustable).
I would certainly recommend it as soap lasts for ages rather than a can of goo which is only a couple of months worth.
  • I bought my husband this and since using it, it has saved money on the price of blades.

  • Well, if you have sensitive skin soap wont be good for you.
You may well develop sensitive skin by using soap for many years.
    You can however -
    a) Rub your blades on jeans. Check it out online. Works.
b.) Make your own shaving paste/gel/foam/cream. Again, check online.
Gillette sensor excel II. Cant fault it
  • Sensitive skin? Consider a shaving oil rather than soap. Or try different soaps. (If you can afford it, have a real shave/lesson at a real barbers - hot towels, the works. Listen and learn! Yes, they'll try to sell you things, but if it gives you a really good shave, may be money well spent.)
Budget tight? Switch to DS & relearn to shave. Complex initially, yes, but So Much Saved on those cartidges!
  • Ive got sensitive skin and make sure I shave in the shower, I use Asdas own gel and have found Gillette disposable razors (not cartridges) last for months, a pack of 5 triple blade disposables have lasted me since December and I shave my head and face regularly. One tip I learnt a while ago, run your razor under the cold tap before use, it tightens the blade
  • Just a quick heads up, I just found packs of 4 Fusion blades for a fiver today, usually closer to a tenner, so picked up 4 packs. Joked with the family that given my reduced rate of growth that will probably keep me in blades for close to 18 months!
  • If you are around Sainsbury's or Asda they often sell the "Nuage" shaving oil which I find is very good for a close shave without irritation. Usually around Ј1 for a little pump spray but as you only need about 4 or 5 drops (or a couple of sprays) these last very well. It may seem odd at first because there is no soap to "shave" but if you have a good mirror you can see the stubble being removed. It works as well as the "King of Shaves" stuff but is about 20% of the price of that.
  • Reading this thread reminds me of my Dad who bought one of those blade sharpening machines called a Rolls Razor. He was convinced that he would never have to buy another blade. The blade itself looked just like a miniature Guillotene and had no guard on it.In order to sharpen the blade one moved the handle back and forth to strop the blade. Guess what he tried it a couple of times and almost slit his jugular!! Gave up and returned to blades.
  • I have gone full on MSE on shaving & stopped...i have a full beard, which has saved me thousands of pounds (not really)
In the past i used a DE razor & used https://connaughtshaving.com/ for my supplies. They do a Blade Sample pack to find the best blade for your face, which is good.
  • Costco have regular deals on Multipack blades, I usually grab a years supply when they are on offer, but Costco isn't moneysaving as invariably there will be some additional items I never knew I absolutely needed.
  • I have thick stubble and use Gillette Fusion. I am on my 3rd on this year. Forget that green strip - they work just fine for up to 100 days. I find them 4 for Ј5 on hotukdeals occasionally. Costs me Ј5 a year in blades.
  • My total spend since first growing a beard to keep warm on motorbikes in about 1976 has been about Ј15 each on 2 hair clippers plus the electricity cost of trimming beard and hair (what is left) on number one every weekend. Wives have many uses. Must have saved a few thousand pounds in the last 38 years. Very MSE.
Wife makes up for savings by spending Ј25/Ј50 on alternate 6 weekly visits to her stylist depending whether it is cut only or cut and colour.
  • ^^^^^ Stopped Shaving mid November this year...... Quite light on top too so I recon a new set of trimmers on the list for this Christmas (Current set are about 12 years old) Will see how it goes but OH loves the beard and I recon I'll save a fortune......
  • I find various shaving club type online things make sense on paper.
I've signed up to one and gone for 5-blade cartidges. So far they're lasting well. It works out at Ј2 a cartridge, which is cheaper than the gilette fusion (my previous shaving system) and they work at least as well, if not better. Cartridges are posted out monthly (although I've opted for bi-monthly).
