A question about : Self Select ISA

Help needed please.

I have my eye on a company who's shares are $0.15 each at the moment.

The problem is they are a USA company and thus I don't know how to buy their shares.
Furthermore I have a strong feeling their shares will be worth Ј15.00 in 10-15 years time.

So im now thinking it would be good if I could somehow buy their shares via an ISA (hence avoiding tax completely).

A friend has said I need to do a self-select ISA as this will allow me to buy the shares aswell as being tax efficient (apparently you can buy foreign shares in a self select ISA).
Can someone please advise if the above is accurate and if so how to go about setting up a self-select ISA

I just want to buy Ј2,000 worth of shares and then ignore them for 15 years
if everything goes to plan my Ј2,000 (which at approx. 10p a share would be 20,000 shares), would mean seeing my investment be worth Ј300,000 (hence why I want the shares via an ISA)

Help please

  • You need a company that don't charge any platform fees other than trading fees, which could be tricky, or just stomach that annual charge.
Hargreaves Lansdown certainly let you buy US shares in their S&S ISA, as I'm sure do many other platforms.
  • Thanks - I think my work pension is held with HL
Ive done some internet searching (which can be a dangerous thing) and found that from a HMRC perspective you can hold US shares in an ISA and ive also read that some of the companies who offer the services of Self-Select ISA's require you to complete a W-8BEN form (which I have just downloaded and will read tomorrow). will defo need to read this form as there's something about withholding taxation/double taxation and if you fill in the W-8BEN form you pay 15% tax on USA shares and not 30%
There's some other stuff about UK private Investors cannot buy AIM Market share's (yet others say you can if its defo an ISA)
im gonna be rich ........... (minus the 15% tax which I knew nothing about. Seems pointless buying USA shares in an ISA if the US government can tax you even if the UK don't)
  • Look at IWeb for cheap share ISA: Ј25 one-off fee plus Ј5 per trade. That would be Ј35 total for your 15-year plan.
  • You will find that it has been possible to hold AIM shares in S&S ISAs since August 2013.
Anything your IS provider will let you purchase within your ISA can be in an ISA. So if you know what you are after, it's simple enough to check whether it can be added to an ISA or not. Although most ISA investors probably wouldn't buy individual shares of any kind, but rather invest in funds.
