A question about : scottish power

My fixed gas and elect deal finishes with scottish power on 31/08/2009 I contacted them to tell them i would be looking at other deals with the view to changeing soon, they said i would'nt be able to change suppliers before the 25th of august if they recieved an application from someone else for me to change suppliers i would have to pay them Ј50. so what they are saying is that i have to wait and see what they have to offer and if i don't like it tough. can they do this??
regards B.T.

  • We are in the same postion and want to go with edf. I wonder if you can ask that the application does not get presented until the 25th? I will have to check. I asume that you will be put on there standard choice? After the end date of the capped tariff runs out.
  • I also want to switch from Scottish Power to EDF, and know it will cost me Ј50 if I move before 30/9/09. However, there is a Ј60 cashback if you switch through TopCashBack

  • this switching larks giveing me a headache, i contacted scot power last week to enquire what tariff i would be on when my fixed rate ended on 29/08 i was told i would be getting info by post on monday 3rd offering me new deals it's now friday and still nothing, i think they are waiting untill the last minute so they will panic us into chooseing one of there deals rather than look elsewhere, well if that's there game i'm afraid it makes me even more determined to move on.
  • Another one here wanting to switch by the end of the month and not pay the Ј50 fee.
It's awful we are having to wait to swich, even though we know it take several weeks for the transfer to complete.
  • yes that's true i've tried pushing them along a bit but the people joe public talks too are just the puppets so what chance do we have.it also costs money talking to these people as they are all 0845 no's
  • I haven't got a BT landline and my 0845/0870 calls are free (actually, fully inclusive is a better description) 24/7
  • I have just had an email form Scottish Power offering another cap until 2010 - anyone else?
  • I have to be honest I will stay put
I was initially with SP and back in 2002 we paid 32 a month for both gas and electric! I switched several times and all that has happened is that my bills went up and I had hassle. I switched back to SP last year - DD has now reduced from 83 to 53 a month and I like the fact I an input readings online whenever I choose and can quickly see where we are
    Just my preference
  • Now I am really worried! I had this e-mail too. It seems they have us over a barrel You can't leave until 25 August but if you wait until 1 September you'll be penalised for leaving the new capped rates for 2010.
As I understand it, anyone wishing to move to a new supplier now will have to tell SP to move them onto the standard rate and then move to a new supplier.
I think I am going to look at some comparison sites to see what will be the best deal. Then tell SP I don't want to cap until 2010 (this assumes I will find a better deal with another supplier - if I don't I will stay with SP) and switch suppliers. If I wait until the last week in August I should be able to switch without any penalties.
Alternatively, maybe I will spend the winter snuggled up with my dogs under a pile of blankets and cooking on my meths camping stove ......
  • Well, I must not be an important customer cos I haven't had the email!!!! and my cap finishes on 30th August
  • I did not get an email either, I sent them an online message asking what would happen when this tarriff runs out and I was told I would automaticvally be switched to Capped Price Engery 2010, but I cannot find any details of this tariff on their website and it is not showing as an option on any of the price comparison websites. I sednt another messaage a week ago asking them for details of the charges on this new tarriff but they have not replied. I am not impressed and will be switching to EDF. Surely if we ask to switch now, byt the time the switch has gone throu it will be after the 31st August so we should be safe to start now?
  • Hello,
Another confused person here! Have spent some time looking at comparison sites this morning and seems that NPower are best tarriff for me, but their customer service ratings are appalling on all of the sites I have used and that puts me off - it's already hard enough switching without their customer service not being up to scratch.
I have found SP ok, I like the online readings and being able to see exactly where I am, I'd like to stay with them if I can. Think I will opt out of the capped scheme as looks like prices might fall slightly later this year and at least that way I'm not tied in.

  • I'm another SP customer with a deal ending 31/8 and I did get the email last week. To my untrained eye there appear to be 2 contenders as far as SP are concerned. First is the Online Discounted Energy July 2010 tafiff (why don't they use shorter names?!?) and then there's the Capped Price Energy September 2010 tariff. I called SP this morning as there was no indication of the tariff breakdown on their email.
The tariff breakdown of the former is apparently
    Gas - first 1143 units @4.069p, 3.296 thereafter
    Leccy - 225@ 15.272, then 10.055
    for the Capped scheme it's
    Gas - 1143 @ 4.195, then 3.398
    Leccy - 225 @ 15.745, then 10.367
The comparison sites all seem to mention another SP tariff (Online Energy Saver 6?) but the woman I spoke to at SP today told me they don't do that one anymore.
I've asked around and the common viewpoint is that there might be a small drop or two this year 'perhaps' but the feeling is that prices will rise again next year. It's impossible to say and is one of life's big questions along with "What is the point of Eminem?".
My feeling is that (as I'm not a huge consumer of fuel) I'd rather have the security that the capped scheme would offer and if the prices do fall then I'd be able to take advantage of whatever savings that offers. There seem to be other plans to consider but as a previous post mentioned, the service ratings would put me off.
One niggle is that I can seemlessly drift on to the SP Capped scheme when the current deal ends but I can't arrange to move to the Discounted tariff in advance if I decide that's the one for me. Why won't they let me say "OK, when this deal ends on 31/8 just put me on the Discounted July 2010 tariff."??? As it's all with the same company I find this rather odd but then when it comes to this energy malarkey and trying to compare all the deals around they seem to go out of their way to make it all as nonsensical as possible!!
