A question about : Sainsburys credit card refusal to close account

Sainsburys bank are refusing to close my credit card even after 6 months of trying because they owe me Ј1.47. (They took too much money when I asked to settle and close the account) They wont issue this to me due to the small sum, nor can they write it off/give to charity. The card has expired, so cant use it and no replacement can be sent as I've asked them to close the account. I've asked them every other month since Dec '13 to close it.
What do I do?

Best answers:

  • Send them an invoice. If the boot was on the other foot they'd have reported a default to the CRAs by now, even for that small sum. On a point of principle don't let them get away with it.
  • OP should send a formal complaint letter. The letter should state that the presence of this card on your credit file could affect your ability to obtain credit. Tell them that you require the account to be closed and the credit reference agencies to be advised that the account is settled. Tell them that if they do not resolve the complaint to your satisfaction, you will refer the complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service.
  • Advise that you will be filing a small claim court action against them to recover this sum if they don't send it to you within 2 weeks.
  • Thanks for the replies. I've sent a formal complaint letter with all of the above included. I've requested a resolution with compensation within 14 calender days from today. I've also reminded them of their obligation under the financial conduct authority's Treating Customer Fairly code of conduct. Hopefully this time it'll work.
