A question about : Ryanair beat them at their own game Ђ1 buys Ј1

I was checking out Ryanair for a cheap getaway and stumbled apon a way of booking their cheapest flights even cheaper title=Have

Basically when booking return flights from the UK the flight back will be priced in ЈЈЈ not €€€, but if you book the return separately it will be priced in €€€ and if you're booking the cheapest flights available they will be converted at €1=Ј1.

For instance Bratislava-Stansted 6th of March, if you book both flights together the return flight will be Ј19.99, if you book separately the return flight will be €19.99 title=Wink

This also applies to any added extras, so if you add a checked bag and choose some premium seats for the Mrs and yourself they will be priced in ЈЈ if booking a return ex-UK but will be priced in €€ if booked separately.

For instance :

London-Bratislava-London 2-6th March booked together with 20kg luggage each and premium seats selected on both legs = Ј228.40 including a CC fee.

London-Bratislava 2 March, with identical extras = Ј114.20

Bratislava-London 6 March, with identical extras = €114.20 = Ј84.45 title=Thanks,

Ј228.40 vs Ј114.20 + Ј84.45 = Ј29.75 in your pocket instead of Ryanairs title=Big

To get the best savings use a fee free CC like the Halifax Clarity, and make sure you choose to pay in €€ when checking out.

If you travel to the same destination regularly, holiday house in Europe business etc you can really maximise the savings.

First purchase your initial flight out of the UK then book all subsequent flights as returns from overseas, so using the Bratislava example you'll be paying €228.40 (Ј168.45) each time instead of Ј228.40 title=Jumping

The €1:Ј1 conversion only seems to apply to the lowest fare class, so if you're booking slightly more expensive flights the website will convert at much less favourable rates title=Frown

Extras such as baggage, seat selection etc are all seem to be converted at the €1=Ј1 rate, so it can be worthwhile booking both legs separately if you're purchasing extras but booking higher fares.

I hope the above helps a few MSEr's save a few ЈЈ

PS

If you're trying to replicate the above with two windows open in your browser the website often reprices both windows to the same currency, when using chrome open a couple of incognito windows and it won't swap currencies on you title=Wink

  • Another dodge (not sure if this still works) is their in-flight menu also uses a 1 GBP = 1 EUR exchange rate. Buy something and pay with a EUR50 note, and ask for the change in GBP
  • I love Karma
I did my good deed for the day by posting this then discovered two seconds later that United Airlines had screwed up exchange rates on their system.
LHR-HNL-LHR & LHR-LAS-LHR for the wife baby and I for under Ј400 combined, and just to top things off we'll be flying in the first class cabin
  • And tickets cancelled, DOT here we come
