A question about : Rubbish removal (without a skip)

Hi there, I was wondering if anyone knows of any good rubbish collection companies that won't overcharge? Our garage is full of the old carpets and underlay we just took up, as well as rubbish from redecorating.

We don't have transportation to take it to the dump ourselves (live in suburban London near a station so don't use a car) and it's too late to get a skip as there's nowhere to put it (all communal gardens).

Best answers:

  • Can't seem to find much on them, but I've heard of these before and I'm sure it was positive!
    https://www.clearabee.co.uk
We had a builder's skip recently and I'm sure they said it was 8 cubic yards, not 6, but that cost us Ј168 (we're in Leeds) so I think the prices are actually pretty reasonable.
  • We've just had a 4 tonne skip for Ј122, however there are some companies who will do a drop and wait service.
They put the skip down, you fill it up, and they take it off 20 minutes later.
Failing that, you could get a HippoBag from B&Q, but they're not cheap
  • Some advertise locally on local Facebook buy and sell pages etc - whether they're all licensed or not may be a different matter!
  • Do your local council offer a pay to take it away service?
I guess the only problem with that might be where you would leave it for them to collect as they're not going to take it out of the garage for you.
  • Aren't there any "Cheaper than a skip" adverts in the local paper?
  • The carpets and underlay have a value to some people. I have used Freecycle to dispose of all sorts - it is amazing what people want, from old plasterboard offcuts, to scrap pallets, to old doors etc. I have also collected old carpets, from neighbours and friends, and used them as floor protection on small building jobs
Also on small building and DIY projects, it is possible to put considerable amounts in the bin. I have neighbours whose bins are rarely full and they are happy for theirs to be used. Other times, over the period of some weeks, I have disposed of heaps through using the surrounding bins. Obviously, one asks first!
  • I've collected old carpets from freecycle and used them as extra layers of insulation over boarded parts of attic.
  • won't they go in the grey bin bit by bit?
  • Take a picture, and post up on the local "Sales & Wants Site".
Someone will give you a ЈЈЈ "best price, cash" offer to dispose of your "junk".
  • We have a little house we rent out and between tenants we replaced all the carpets. the carpet fitter piled it all up outside to load into his van later and a woman came across the road and asked if she could have it all. She wanted it to lay down on her garden and allotment to kill weeds.
  • I agree with furts - begin by seeing what can be freegle / freecycled. Obviously be honest about the condition it's in, but as pointed out, some people just need some old carpet, for all sorts of reasons!
If no joy, ask the council what they would charge and then see if any of the other companies are cheaper.
  • A warning about this company:
Today Clearabee were booked to remove rubbish from my property in East London. At the time of booking I was asked to pay a Ј49 deposit. I was concerned about making an upfront payment, but was reassured by the salesman.
Two drivers arrived earlier than scheduled and immediately starting finding issues:
remarking on the contents, despite my already informing the person at the time of booking what the rubbish was due to a house recent refurbishment.
They then informed me that they would have to block the road, there were three spaces available outside the house.
They also told me that it was unlikely the rubbish would fit in their vehicle, so I told them that they could leave the branches in the garden. Despite this they then told me that I would have to pay Ј138.
I’d been told that the cost of the waste removal would be Ј110 - they then asked for my debit card for payment.
I refused to pay until they had done the work - I had already paid a deposit.
They continued to ask for upfront payment, I told them to do the job, then they would be paid. That was the last I saw of them.
I then called to make a complaint and spoke to someone named Robert, who spent 10 minutes asking me about the size of the car parking spaces & where the men had disappeared to. He asked me when the spaces were available and repeatedly asked me why I was calling. It was evident that he was evading the issue & having a laugh with his colleagues (at my expense). Clearly, this is a complete scam of a company ripping customers off with upfront payments without providing a service. The CEO is Daniel Long - appears that the only means of contacting him is via Linked In.
  • Cut it up, put it in the back of your car and take to your local "recycling centre" (or tip in proper English).
  • Do your council offer a bulky waste collection service at all ? Some do.
  • Hire a hertz24x7 van and chuck it in there. Or similar
Get a skip bag eg hippo
