A question about : Ripped off by Ryanair.

Sorry I know this is probably the wrong place to come for this particular problem, me and my mate flew to Tenerife last week to meet a gang of mates there, but because of work commitments we couldn't go until Monday morning so we flew from Manchester with Thomson on the outward journey with absolutely no problems. However when it came to flying back I booked the flights with Ryanair to Liverpool (We're both from Liverpool.) I'd printed off the ticket but hadn't read ALL of the ticket (Last time I flew with Ryanair this was all I needed, I've flown with them quite a few times but not for about 5 years!) when we got to the check in desk at Tenerife South we were informed that we should have downloaded and printed a boarding pass, when I said I thought that was all I needed, I was told no you need to print out a boarding pass and you'll need to go over to the Ryanair kiosk to be given a pass. isn't there anywhere else to print one off? I asked No it's too late, you need to go over there and pay 70 Euros each to get the boarding passes! 70 Euros, EACH, the flights originally only cost 38 Euros each so now we were having to pay 140 Euros to get a piece of paper so they could give me a boarding pass even though my name was on the passenger list!! So the question is: Is it legal to charge so much for a piece of paper that I had to hand in to get given boarding passes? If no one on here can help do you know where I can get help with this problem? Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Best answers:

  • Fully legal - it has never been hidden and the high charge is there to condition travellers to arrive with the required paperwork.... Or pay the price.
It seems you assumed it was like the old days - but by not reading their requirements, ended up having to pay their inflates cost for a service at the airport. The same holds true if your luggage was too heavy or you brought with you some other item that they charge additionally for.
As you would have been aware of the boarding requirement when you booked via the web page, or by looking at the printed confirmation, it was your omission, not theirs that caused the extra expense - and unfortunately that has hit you in the picket!
  • You haven't been ripped off by Ryanair.
You failed to read the full t&c details on the website so the only person who ripped you off was yourself.
  • i fly Ryan air all the time, they email me every day until I check in online, then when you check in online it automatically goes to your boarding passes with a big notification saying print these and proceed through security.
its unfortunate that you didnt read the emails or T&C I agree Ј70 is a lot for the boarding pass but they have to make money somewhere.
  • The alternative is finding an internet cafe and printing these off for a couple of €
  • So much negativity, we all make mistakes people! I'd agree with nomoneytoday, try and find an internet terminal at the airport and print your boarding card there. There's nothing you can do to reclaim the cost now, as the charges are in Ryanair's T&C's. Many other airlines, including Ryanair's rival easyJet, now have mobile boarding passes. As an example, easyJet have an app and once you've booked your flight, can get your boarding pass downloaded onto your app. Just show it at check-in and when you get on the plane and you're sorted
  • I dont understand why all these people are jumping to the defence of that offensive, arrogant company.
The only lesson for you to learn from this is that you shouldn't fly Ryanair. They are the worst of the worst. Fortunately, there are plenty of other budget airlines to choose from who aren't so bad, and who are just as cheap. I fly Jet2 quite regularly and find their rules to be nowhere near as anal, you get much more legroom, their staff don't look like they hate you and it's overall fairly pleasant - the best thing is their flights of often competitively priced.
Too many people fly Ryanair because they're too lazy to search an alternatively good deal. In the end, it's only a matter of time before you get stung by their completely insulting set of rules and they give you the middle finger. Even if you have to pay a little bit more to fly with someone else, it's worth it for the peace of mind, and actually feeling like your a valued customer rather than a piece of !!!! that they can walk all over.
  • I agree entirely, but i also wanted to be treated with respect. My main point was that Ryanair aren't your only option for a cheap no frills flight, and the alternatives are actually better and can be quite often just as cheap. Not always, i grant you, but with enough forward planning they certainly can be very compelling.
  • Just a couple of points :
You can't go to an internet caf! and print off boarding passes because online check in closes 4 hours before the flight time. I think the charges for re-printing boarding passes at the airport were significantly reduced from the start of December, but this only applies if you have checked in on line.
Ryanair have bigger seat pitch than Jet2, Easyjet etc etc. - 30" as opposed to 29" for the others.
  • They don't like to make it easy for you, but it's not illegal!
  • But are they? If these private car paring companies are being told by the court they can only charge the overstayer what it costs them in lost revenue for the parking spot ie nil or very small amount and not the Ј100's they would like.
It might be worth a moneyclaim online punt you will only lose the Ј80 or so if you lose.
  • Hmm seat pitch of 30" on Jet2. Very curious to know where they say this. Do they also say that new aircraft being operated this season and next have seat pitch of only 28".
