A question about : Retired people, do you not get bored?

Is it not easy to get bored when you're retired? Do you have a life of daytime TV, do you not get bored?

UNless you have loads of money, it must be very boring imo

Best answers:

  • We don't have time to be bored. I had more time spare when fully employed.
I do find time to post here though!
  • Very occasionally I get bored (been retired over 8 years now) but usually it's a case of 'what's next on the daily list to do'. Certainly having hobbies helps.
  • I enjoy working / playing on the computer.
  • I'm deeply involved in the Residents' Association and keep the accounts and other records.
  • Contacts to be made on the Amateur Radio.
  • Photography and processing photos on the computer.
  • Maintaining / repairing our numerous gadgets.
  • Gardening ... there's always several jobs waiting out there, especially in the summer.
  • Walks in the grounds with Oscar cat and just walking generally in the neighbourhood.
  • Trips into town.
  • Daily chinwags with neighbours in the block.
  • Drives in the countryside ... visits to National Trust properties and the like.
  • etc. etc. I do sometimes allow myself a couple of hours afternoon nap in the recliner, especially at this time of year when the coal fire is very inviting.

  • I'm in my 30s and I would not be bored for a second if I retired tomorrow.
and I wouldn't need much money, its more the time that I wish I had.
  • I know many retired people and they all say they don't know how they ever found time to work
I tried not working once but I only lasted 4 weeks before I was climbing the walls so got another job. But I was younger then. Now, I can't wait for the day to come when I'm not a wage slave any more
  • Hell no!!!
Took early retirement 4 years ago and don't know how I ever found the time to go out to work.
    Never been happier.
  • So long as you've got the money to leave the house you can get involved with stuff. The problem is if you don't have the money to leave the house and sit there for weeks on end without seeing another person.
  • I'm not there yet but going by my dad he's not got time to be bored, what with golf, his many hobbies such as painting, bird watching, gardening, walking the dogs, several holidays a year and a much more active social life than I've got he's have a whale of a time in retirement.
  • Having taken early retirement, not in the slightest.
I tend to be busy, though. It would probably be boring not doing anything or going anywhere. As it is, the odd day just at home is welcome.
  • Why do you think so many of them are on MSE?
  • I'm retired but I never get bored. As someone above commented, my day is so full I wonder how I ever found time to work.
During the day I listen to music, play my guitar, go out for walks, go out bike riding, go visiting interesting places and do lots of other things.
I am also active on MSE and a few other forums.
I rarely watch TV during the daytime and never Daytime TV. I might occasionally watch the News or a recorded film or an episode of a drama in the afternoon.
    I love being retired.
  • Don't forget some people are medically retired and are limited by their health. My friend has fibromyalgia/ME so can be fatigued for long periods. Spends her time resting and knitting.
  • Yes. I used to spend my time walking and cycling, but now I can't do that for health reasons I'm going stir crazy.
  • I'm another who is in a happy and contented retirement. I never get bored and there is no shortage of things to do or people to see. I go to the gym, have pub lunches, visit friends, plus we go on plenty of holidays and weekend breaks. The hedonistic lifestyle is to be recommended.
A couple of people have asked me if I would be interested in doing volunteer work. I said that I have neither the time nor the inclination. My time is for me and my family now. After all, you're a long time dead!
  • Bored? I haven't got time to be bored! been retired about 4 years now, and am so busy minding grandkids, knitting for said grandkids, reading all the books I didn't have time to before..........etc, etc I cant think how I had time to work!
oh and I have been disabled for many years and the disability has got worse - so I cant go for walks, horse riding, or anything physical really. BUT, I look on it as an opportunity - I can learn new hobbies from my armchair and I am almost ALWAYS home - handy for emergency babysitting!
  • Not bored here , I go swimming a couple of times a week , walk everyday, spend time with the grandkids, go visiting , holiday or trips out when we feel like it, spend time in the garden, chatting , watch what I want when I want (not daytime tv) I love it and OH retires in about 50 days (yes he's counting) we just bought a nice newer car so we'll be off on more trips and holidays whenever we want and can afford.
  • My mum got bored when she retired because she had a very small social circle. She was ok in the summer but got quite depressed in the winter when she was getting out and about less - might have been easier if the grandkids were closer but they're the other end of the country.
She wasn't one for daytime tv, did have hobbies but couldn't motivate herself to do them. In the end she was driving round aimlessly because she couldn't stand being in the house on her own so she went back to work a couple of days a week, then when losing her job at the ripe old age of 70 she carried on doing voluntary work and her own consultancy.
  • I've been retired 5 years now, and am still waiting to get bored! I never watch daytime telly (hell, I barely watch it at night!) I might watch Judge Rinder (when I remember) as it's hilarious!!
