A question about : Restaurants playing music too loud

Is one of my irritations. When I go out for a meal with friends, relatives or colleagues, I like chatting with them. In establishments where the music is too loud, it's annoying as cannot hear each other and the waiters

On a few occasions, about three of us have approached the staff requesting the music to be lowered in volume and get the responses 'it's what other customers want'.

One pub chain, Yates, well the one we go to, the staff can change the volume in different areas.

We do not like music so loud that we cannot hear ourselves think and need to shout.

On two occasions we have left restaurants because the loud music and the staff deny it's too loud. Both times we have left when we haven't ordered anything.

When you play music at home when eating, you put it at a volume which is comfortable for the ear.

Is it just me and my friends etc that find loud music in restaurants annoying?

Best answers:

  • These are not just pubs but restaurants
  • Any restaurant with a dance floor is going to have loud music
Maybe avoid the pub chains which serve food and go to an actual restaurant
  • Got to admit I've experienced this too at an (allegedly) decent Italian restaurant chain, which is just a restaurant not a bar or otherwise. It's beyond irritating and I do wonder if it's to try and get diners to move on fast from the tables for the next lot to come in.

  • if it's too loud, you're too old ;-)
  • take a loud hailer next time, and 'shout' over the noise.. management may take the hint!
on a serious note, if really loud, local environmental health dept at council may need to be informed..
  • I've noticed this in shops too.
If the music is too loud, I won't bother stepping foot in there.
  • Which one ?
  • I did used to love customers asking us to turn the music down, we even had people asking us to turn it off you're not at your nans house.
If you come into a restaurant that is known for being loud and fun, and you find yourself in a loud restaurant then whose fault is that?
    Certainly not the restaurants!
Where I worked the music was set at a level determined by head office as it was a brand standard. It wasn't offensively loud, I could certainly hear perfectly well to take orders so fail to understand why people can't have a normal conversation.
  • Go to a restaurant. If the place is too loud for you, you aint the clientile wanted. Same for shops. Some on here would have a heart attack in a hollister shop.
