A question about : Recommendations for a stonemason in Edinburgh

Hello there,

I am looking for recommendations for a stonemason in the Edinburgh area. My wife and I have an Edwardian stonebuilt house and the front requires some work. Some sections of the stonework probably will have to be replaced and there is some repointing to be done. Google does bring up some local stonemason's websites that look quite professional. However I have no idea how good or bad they are.

I am not necessarily looking for the cheapest; I'd rather pay more to have the work done properly. I understand older houses require some careful treatment when renovating.

Recommendations and experiences good or bad gratefully received.

Much obliged.

  • Hi, a few years ago we used Graeme Brown Stonemasons of Dunbar, would not hesitate to use them again, a quick search will show some of their work and awards.

  • Pop along to your local lodge?
  • I have not used him but I have seen some of Graeme Browns work to! See website

  • Why not get in touch with Historic Scotland? Am sure they can recommend some pretty good stone-masons.
    Good luck.
  • I used JMS Stonemasons https://www.jmsstonemason.co.uk/gallery2.htm to replace some blocks at the front of the house. He seems to know what he's doing and I was happy with his work.
  • Thanks to all for taking the time to post your suggestions. The work by Graeme Brown does indeed look impressive. However if he restores castles, I don't know if he would be interested in a replacing a few mullions and blocks.
  • I would recommend Torus Stonecraft for any stone restoration or repairs.
They were reliable, friendly and their craftsmanship was second to none when I had them restore my stonework.
