A question about : Recommend me a good home alarm system

Just moved into a 4 bed semi in a quiet village, back garden has gardens either side (attached house have a big dog) and back fence backs onto thick connifers. There have been a couple of break ins recenlty on the estate and we want to get an alarm just in case. We have a budget of Ј500(ish) so can you please recommend what to get?
We have a small dog (king charles spaniel, 12Kg) so ideally it needs to be pet friendly.

We already have 3 x security lights covering the back garden, and a new DoorStop composite door on order, but want to be as safe as possible
Thanks in advance

  • Sorry can admin please move this to DIY forum
  • Around these parts Ј500 will get you a visit from a local alarm company, lots of good advice & a system to suit your needs.
  • Wired or wireless alarm?
  • macman
Sorry i forgot to say, wireless if possible
  • feed the dog , make friends , and let it do the work
  • I've used these a few times and always been happy with the stuff.

  • We have a Visonic wireless system. Professionally installed by a local company who are the Visonic dealer for our area. You're looking at about Ј500 fully installed in a typical house.
Works well. Sensor batteries are easy to replace. Did them myself after 2 years, not because any had run down, but thought it better to get new ones. Had the company replace the battery in the bell box because it requires working at the top of a ladder. Just did it after 2 years, not because it was saying battery was low, just for peace of mind. Installer said the bell box battery is good for 2-3 years unless the alarm is constantly going off.
Of course, an alarm system (unless it is linked to a monitoring station) is really only for personal reassurance. Most people ignore them when they go off, only complaining if they repeatedly go off. Bit like "security" lights - they do little more than allow any unwanted visitor to see clearly in the dark without having to carry a torch around and look dodgy...
