A question about : Reclaiming PPI from a canceled policy

9 years ago I became sick and claimed on my PPI to cover my loan with the Halifax. after 12 months I was declared disabled and unable to return to work. I tried to claim the disabled element of the insurance but was told I was unable to do this as I had already claimed for being sick. I cancelled my policy as it was useless to me
My loan fell into arrears and I spoke to litigation last month who told me to get in touch with the insurance as I may be entitled to a pay out as he thought that was wrong information.

Can I claim or not?

Best answers:

  • The policy paid out but was useless? Sounds like it was fit for purpose.
  • I think everyone is confusing the issues here. When the person in litigation said to get in touch with the insurers as the OP may be entitled to a payout as this information was not correct, I think what he meant was that the OP's claim for disability should have been met and the OP should contact the insurance company and request that the loan is paid off. I don't think the suggestion had anything to do with misselling.
As far as I know most PPI policies pay out for five years for sickness/accident. Did yours only cover you for 12 months?
  • Yes they have completely missed the point. And yes it was useless when I cancelled it as I was told I couldn't claim again as I had already claimed for being sick so what would be the point of continuing to pay?
It covered me for a period of 12 months when I was sick. The disabity element was for a 5 year period. This is about claiming for the period which should of been paid via PPI not about claiming previous monthly payments for PPI.
  • I've seen Cardif Pinnacle policies with a 60 month payout for sickness, with just 12 for unemployment.
To be honest if 12 months isn't long enough then should have got a different policy.
  • Oh yes, they do exist. Its just a rarer type. its just like PHI which generically, you would describe as being long term (i.e. up to retirement). However, that also had some unusual versions that would only pay our for limited periods which included 24 months or 60 months.
  • The policy I had was just included in the loan. I had no idea I was going to fall sick or be declared disabled after the 12 month payment for sickness element.
The insurance covered for sickness which was a 12 month cover and a disabled which was 5 years cover.
Both were separate element to the policy not both part of the same element.
I was told as I had already claimed for being sick for 12 months there was no way I could then make another claim on the policy.
I couldn't of taken out another policy at this point as it would not of covered me.
dunstonh the guy in the litigation told me that the information that the claim handler had given me was incorrect and that I should have received the insurance based on evidence of disability. He gave me the number to ring and said I should complain and there may be a payment due to me due to the fact my claim had been rejected due to incorrect information being given.
Hope this is a bit clearer
