A question about : Quick 4/5 door car for under 4k

Hi.

I am looking for ideas for a reliable, quick (less than 7 sec to 60mph) family car, for under Ј4k.

Currently have a Mitsubishi FTO but will need to change it at some point for a 4/5 door hatch/saloon so I have more space for the little one.

Ideally I don't want it older than 2002 ish.

Thanks for your suggestions!

Best answers:

  • Mondeo ST220. Would i suggest anything else?
  • Lots of cars fit the bill, depends on your preference;
Japanese, UK, German...then 4 pot + turbo or V8/V6....or 6 cylinder + twin turbos, but you may struggle with the minimum age on the last one.
  • R36 .
  • +1 for a Mondeo - 3 real belts across the back & boot space to accomodate *all* little one's essentials as well as most of nice-to-haves & might-throw-a-tantrum-withouts. And at least 2 buggies.
As time passes, you can get 3 car seats across the back. (Got that T shirt, still got the car although they outgrew the carseats.)
Easy for spares, range of engines, find a garage with several & testdrive til you find one you like... Oh, later models have Thatcham 2 security inbuilt which helps with car insurance premiums. (Ask?!)
You'll be pushed to find a more available, affordable vehicle with such a high NCAP rating - so pick one that you find fun to drive too!
  • Audi S4 is hard to beat
  • Skoda Octavia vRS, petrol if mpg not a big issue or a diesel version if mpg a concern but it is a bit slower.
I've had my petrol Octavia vRS estate for 4 years and love it. Reliable, cheap to maintain and a massive boot. It also has a chain cam belt so no expensive replacements every 4 years.
  • Mazda RX8 231, go for a pre 2006 (cheaper tax) but avoid the 2003 model.
Its reliable if its been looked after, make sure the engine has been compression tested before purchase.
Failing that buy a knackered one for Ј1500 where everything works bar the engine, and have a fully reconditioned engine fitted for Ј2500 from a specialist. Looked after and driven properly should get you 100k out of it easily.
  • I adore my Berlingo Multispace. Sliding doors, huge boot, 3x3 point belts across the back - what more could you ask for?
  • Jaguar XJR. Bit thirsty but for the money (at this end of the scale) nothing will compete for speed, comfort or space.
  • Forester XT, might scrape into a 2.5 if you hunt around and buy privately.
  • Not quite in budget and a fair few miles but 6.1s and six years old.

or this one slightly older but lower miles.

Get a S6...half the road tax (nearly!)
  • With little one on the way, how about discarding the "quick" part of your query?
  • Saab 9-3 Aero - 2.8 Turbo does well under 7 secs 0-60, or the 2.0 Turbo is just over with lower running costs. They are pretty cheap.
Mazda 6 MPS 2.3T - Probably just over budget for the moment but not miles out. As I type I see someone also had the same idea
BMW 330i - 10 year old models may be within budget
BMW 545i - Not many about, but pretty quick.
Cadillac CTS 3.6 - Surprisingly quick for a luxury barge, at least in a straight line
Volvo S60 T5 - Volvo safety and quick too...
