A question about : Question about my facebook name

Sorry I didn't know which board to post this in.
My name on facebook is Eleanor, my real name, but I wanted it to be Elle since that is what everyone calls me, but will this affect my competition entries?
I was just wondering since I much prefer my nickname, but I don't want to use it and then if I win the prizes are invalid.
Thank you x

Best answers:

  • My name on there is Al (real name Allan) and I've won stuff on there. I always make sure that when I fill out the Facebook competition forms though that I use 'Al' so they can link it to my profile.
  • FB are starting to block people using nicknames, and people with mse in their name (as obviously they know it links them to comps) Ive taken mse out of my name.
You dont have to use your full name and for comping they can link you back to your acc to confirm it was your entry so wouldnt worry too much about that.
But when comping dont make too many comments per day and dont tag loads of photos because that will get your account blocked, ive lost count of the people on here who've had their acc blocked.
My oh had hers 'suspended' - even though she very very rarley comps ive got over 1000 likes whereas she only has 70, but because when she had a day comping they blocked because (i didnt realise if you post over 50 comms saying the same kind of thing they will first stop you commenting for 15 days, then if you continue after that they will block you)
Also dont forget fb do not endorse or make a provision for people who just comp, so 1 by 1 we will all get blocked if we only comp.
  • Okay thanks very much - I might just keep my name after all to stay on the safe side!
  • As far as facebook is concerned a shortened variation of your name is fine, ie Elle instead of Eleanor, Al instead of Alan etc. It's the nicknames which are completely made up names like Princess Mushroom Head that they don't like. I do all my comps in my full name but facebook is and always has been a shortened version and it's never been a problem, on the occasion I've been asked to provide ID the promoter has been happy that my facebook name is a shortened version of my name. Its when people enter a comp in one name and their ID is in a completely different name that the problems arise.
  • Thank you so much everyone. I didn't expect such quick and helpful responses x
  • As above also quite a few posts on here about peoples acc getting blocked, and on winners circle and various other sites related and no related to comping.
I think as long as you are using your real name or a verson thereof eg.
'THOMAS HARRY BOBBINGS' could be ok as 'TomH Bob' but as
'ikkle87' says above you may then just have to prove to the comp or fb your true id (pointing out that it is your name just abbreviated etc...
and quite a few people do this if only for the simple fact if your name is quite a common name -'John Smith' there will prolly be hundreds of John Smiths on fb..
Good luck and dont worry too much as quite a few fb comps (espec the bigger prize comps) make you fill an entry form or a sweepstake form anyway so that then links your fb page to that comp, no matter if there are 50 people with the same name..
  • Thats the trouble 'sue' it isnt an actual written rule,
Im just going on what fb said to my partner - she made around 50 comms just saying thank you & good luck to all.. (extract taken from 3rd link -''getting blocked for other reasons: i discovered the hard way that posting a similar comment on a number of pages repeatedly will also get you blocked).and posts on here and various other sites around the net there is quite a bit more info on di cokes blog -
