A question about : Previous SFA occupant debt

I am not worried by this, however I would like some guidance on what to do. I moved into a quarter in July, I know the previous occupant was marched out in May/early June.

Since then we have received various letters, which have all been returned to sender. However one day I opened one by mistake, I then contacted Vodafone and advised them that the previous occupant had left, and no i didn't have a forwarding address.

N Power then sent a letter to the occupant asking for forwarding details, which I contacted them to advise I didn't have them. I now know the previous occupants were in debt and were on a Debt Management Plan....

Posting letters back to companies is not working! I'm happy to fend off anyone who wants to knock on the door and ask for money/goods in lue but is there anything else I can do short of opening all the mail and contacting the companies direct?

Best answers:

  • If you get anymore letters, return to sender with a letter stating that you have told them x amount times that the person they are looking for, no longer lives and that any further letters you receive from them will be considered harassment and you will deal with that appropriately.
Or you could just been the letters and not worry about.
  • We bin then, spend no time opening them nor replying to them.
  • Thanks, Like I say we usually return to sender. Stupid thing is that NPower supply my gas and electricity, so you would think they know he's left!

  • I didn't mention the four bags of clothing we found in the loft! All brought by his wife, all look new (some with tags) mainly from Next/River Island. now in a box going to a Charity shop!
    Compulsive shopper/ hoarder!
  • Won't DHE tell you the details of the previous occupants? Then PSF / UAO would find out his new unit, to forward the mail on. Even if he's discharged they'd have a termination address. That's what I'd do anyway, along with a strongly worded note telling him how much hassle he's caused you.
Likewise the clothing in the loft, I'd'd want to track them down and return that, it's their belongings and not for you to give to a charity shop surely?
  • Previous occupants should have paid to have their mail redirected - its one of the items that Disturbance Allowance is for.
Either put stickers on the front saying "Not Known at this address, return to sender", or bin them. There's no way you should expend any energy forwarding some lazy sh**'s mail for them.
