A question about : Power ni direct debit

Hi folks,

We bought our house last year and set up an account with Power ni, our direct debit was set up at Ј37 p/m which was fine. Now we received a letter saying our estimated costs for the next year would be Ј828 so our DD would go up to Ј69 p/m. Does this seem right?

We live in a 3 bed terrace and there's only two of us, we're usually both out at work until after 5pm.

Thanks

  • That does seem quite high! I have a keypad and put Ј80 every other month. Do you run a tumble dryer or heaters a lot?
  • There may be a shortfall to make up, so the monthly DD is set on the high side to cover it. Our DD is Ј55 per month and I'd say our usage is fairly average.
  • Ј37/month does seem low..... I think Ticked may be right in that maybe you are in arrears and they have upped the DD to cover that along with usual estimated bill..
  • Our bill is Ј30 p/m and I thought that was high.
  • Pay quarterly DD and mine is never over Ј55
  • Main reason I moved from PowerNI was they consistently overestimated usage and wouldn't adjust DD until the annual review meaning they often owed me hundred of pounds. Muiltiply that up by thousands of customers and you can work out why they do it. Even when interest rates are low they must make a fortune.
There are cheaper providers who are easier to pay.
  • I would rather pay by quarterly DD - even though I think there is a smaller 'discount' at least you only pay for what you have used.
  • Mine is Ј95 per month
3 bed semi, 3 of us living here.
  • We went for the keypad option, seems to work out cheaper for us: averages Ј63 per month - 4 bed semi, 3 adults working different patterns.
  • I pay Ј20 per month in a 3 bed semi with 2 adults. I reckon mine will go up slightly when it is next calculated but I can't see it being much.
  • Seems our usage is not as bad as I thought it was. We are with Airtricity and pay between Ј40 and Ј45 a month for a 4 BR House, occupied by 2 Adults and 2 children.
  • Very interesting the wide variation on usage here...... House size, type of heating and level of insulation will obviously make a difference but I wonder how much the use of certain appliances increases the usage...
Having 3 young kids, I know our Tumble Dryer is usually on at least once every other day during the week and 3 or 4 times a day on a Saturday/Sunday if doing the bedding..
Cooking for us is gas apart from Oven which is electric.
Other than that is all just lighting and general appliances like TV'S Computers etc..... mind you I could possibly save by turning off rather than leaving on Standby...
