A question about : PIP..Is there some truth.

Morning ....

Has anyone heard anything in regards to PIP and 'noise being made that it's going to become means tested'.
Another member made the comment on the benefits & tax credits board but I'm unable to find any other info.

Thanks

  • Must admit I read this and wondered what it was all about.
Am going to do some research!
  • I can't find anything anywhere other than rumours.
I can see how the government may see it as a cost saving but actually it would probably cost them more in the long run depending upon what they mean by means testing. Some individuals with disabilities who work/have private pension with 16k+ already end up contributing to Disability Facilities Grant's, boilers, school dinners, prescription costs, carers and don't get things like winter heating allowances, SDA's etc... If PIP is taken away unless your on means tested benefits they would presumably be far better off living of ESA and PIP and be eligible for HB and CT assistance which would cost the country more plus they wouldn't be paying tax on their wages/pension.
  • Thanks both of you... I've had a bit of a dig but couldn't find anything myself...
    .bll78...totally in agreement.....
  • I believe it was in reference to a comment I'd made.
I do not have any specific information on this - other than comments about DLA/PIP being taxable being made by 'sources close to the government.'
There have been no consultations or formal moves towards this.
Nor were there 12 months before child benefit was means tested.
Scaremongering - I should have put the original statement better, but do not consider this to be unlikely based on what's been going on.

A _LOT_ of unannounced cuts are coming down the pipe, according to spending plans, and much of this must fall on working-age benefits - including disability benefits - as cuts to universal benefits to pensioners have been ruled out.
  • Thanks for clarifying.... I have read the links you provided on the other thread.
Would they take into account household income or just the DLA/PIP claimants income when/if they do decide to means test the benefit.. after all the benefit is paid to aid the disability suffered to the claimant....Time will tell.
  • For someone with a partner earning an income that doesn't qualify them for UC and then to possibly loose the disability payments it will leave them at a severe disadvantage if they are unable to work at all.
  • I also heard from somewhere about disability premiums being scrapped.
Surely the whole point about getting extra is because illness is long term, where as job seeking shouldn't be.
  • the tories plans for further spending cuts will see unimaginable cuts to benefits, which will include the means testing of everything except state pension and the taxation of all working age benefits,it is the only way they can achieve their aim of reducing spending to 1930s levels in relation to gdp
this isn't scarmongering but fact there is no other way such cuts can be achieved,on May 7th you must keep this in mind, true labour will have to make cuts but not on this scale and in a fairer way, given the choice i know who will get my vote
  • Really sounds like 'electioneering scaremongering'. I can understand disability benefits becoming taxable - don't know why they're not, but don't see how means testing can be justified.
