A question about : Philips hue system

Does anyone have this?

Would you recommend it? I am not really interested in the 'gimmick' side of it but would be interested in how others use it.

I have a son who struggles to get to sleep and waking up in the morning. I would want to use it so the light dims gradually at night turning off at a time I choose and then to come on again gradually in the morning, again at a time I choose. Would it do this and more importantly would my son be able to override what I have programmed in any way (by turning the light back on at the switch for example).

I would only need one main control and one light, anyone know the cheapest way of achieving this.

One last thing, do they have to be controlled by a phone app? (I tend not to have the most updated phones and don't want be be forced to upgrade my phone just to get the light to work!) Can they be controlled/programmed by a computer?

Thanks

  • I can't help you with this device but I have heard many people talk positively about the Lumie alarm clocks, not sure if they do the going-to-sleep stuff but know they do with the alarm clock in the morning.
One thing I will say though is that getting up in the morning is always going to be hard for teens and children approaching teenagers, it doesn't get easier until a pattern is established by the late '20s. It's a hormonal thing and I recently read that the body clocks of teenagers and young adults is set significantly out of sync with the rest of the world by about 4 hours which is great to know, but doesn't really give you anything but an understanding that it's not just your son or anyone's child/yourself it is a proven scientific fact that affects if not all then a great deal of teenagers and young people, so as much as a light may help, it will never be made easy by a light. But maybe if you build it up a bit with the help of the power of suggestion/psychology you may be able to get more out of it.
  • I looked into getting a Lumie clock last year but I didn't want to spend that much when I wasn't sure if it would work so I have a cheap ikea lamp with an energy saving bulb in it, the kind that takes ages to warm up, plugged into a timer switch. The whole set-up probably cost less than Ј10.
I have noticed that it is much easier to get up on these dark mornings when my alarm goes off, I've recently noticed that I'm waking up at the same time on days off too wondering why my light isn't on. I'm still not going to get the Lumie because this way I have the light and can still wake up to my ipod / radio.
The timer switch does have an over-ride but it's so annoyingly complicated I haven't bothered to figure it out, the lamp switch does nothing.
As for gradual dimming at night I'm not sure how to solve that one, if I set it up mine would just instantly switch off.
  • I have considered the lumie clock, but can get a hue system for a little extra which might be more beneficial in the long tun as I can add extra lights to it if I need to.
I will look again at the lumie, its good to hear positive feedback regarding it.
  • Yes. You can use the application on android phone!
