A question about : PC Support Anywhere Idea

Good monring guys,

I have an idea to maybe make some money on the side, which I could certainly do with.

I am thinking of making a website that offers PC support and tutorials. The thing is is that I can do it from anywhere, it is a terminal style support where I effectively log onto the computer and show people whereever they are.

Do you think this is a good idea?

Thanks

  • yep. my company offers the same service for companies
  • I have sent you a PM koksrob asking a few questions.
    Thanks
  • Great idea. I would like to do the same but I can't at the moment due to work commitments. As a result I would like to be involved with such a business in some other form.
I would imagine a common problem would be firewalls. Is there a piece of software that can help a remote desktop connection through a firewall?
assuming they can allow the program access if need be, possible for most home users as a message pops up asking
  • I am now looking into it. Thank you everyone for the support.
If anyone has any ideas or features they would like to see just PM me or write it on here.
    Thanks once again.
  • A very good idea. Considered the same thing on many occasions but never really got around to doing anything!
  • I do not know what to do about the cost structure. It can go one of two ways:
    1. Pay per "hour" style where a customer pays per time that I have to help them.
    or
    2. Per type of problem, so, for example, fixing a problem in word would cost ЈX where as fixing a problem server would be ЈY.
Which do you think would be better guys? Or is there a way to price other than these methods.
    Thanks Once again...
BTW, i think the name is going to be "Help Me!"
  • I think it'd be a brilliant idea!! I'm having numerous problems with the pc from hell and can't find anyone to turn to for help apart from PC World who want to charge me a minimum labour charge of Ј120 just to look at it
It'd be great to be able to email/call someone, say "this is what's happening, what do I do" and have step by step advice without the need to remorgage the house! Oh and no technical jargon. Just clear, easy to understand language. Good luck if you do do ahead and do it!
  • The guy who does my computer repairs, set up etc, he charges Ј30.00 per hour, hope that helps x
  • I think the PC support part is the better of the two suggestions. I think that tutorials are already oversaturated. For the programs I use there is nothing I cannot find out in the top 10 results of a google search.
  • Yeh good point on the tutorials. Oversaturation appears to be prominent (I should not use big words, i dont really get them)!
Anyhoo, if anyone wants some "free/knockdown" support once I am up and running to help me gain a bit of a base and confidence then please just ask.
OF COURSE MSE Discount will be in place for all those who use the forums and help others. I am nice like that, not like a big corporation who couldnt give two fiddles about customers.
  • You sound like a lovely guy, and I wish you all the best in the world.
Ps are you any good at doing flow diagrams etc on a pc, to go into a document! may need to shout for help soon! My bright idea to be a mature student at Open Uni
  • It is coming along now!
    Website is well underway.
Am I allowed to put the link to it here?
  • I am really stuck on the pricing scheme! WOuld people prefer to pay per hour? or by job type?
  • Tricky one that is, some problems take ages to figure out, as you know, others are solved really quick. I would initially go down the fixed price route....say Ј30.00 which will give you an hour to fix, anything more complicated you need to give a price for, or you could go for Ј30.00 for the first hour and then Ј15.00 per hour or part hour after that.
One question though, how are they paying if you plan to do it remotely?
  • I was going to use paypal.
Is it a bad idea to ask for payment after I have fuxed the problem. Or before?
    Thanks
  • Thanks Browntoa, I just wanted to make sure thats all. I did not want to break any rules.
