A question about : Pay for your 2012 holiday the Old Style Way

After a fantastic family trip to Disney World in October, we've decided we want to go back in 2013 (April). title=Jumping

However, it's going to take a lot of tight beltening and saving money whenever and wherever we can to make this happen ! The idea is to NOT put the holiday/spending money on a credit card title=Eusa

I thought it might be useful to set up a 'Holiday Savings Challenge' where we can chart progress and jot down any savings/cost cutting ideas through using the OS/Up Your Income boards. Plus any other threads that we can use to help us save the money we need to go.

If anyone would like to join me, I'd be very happy to include you in the challenge. title=Big

Just jot down where you'd like to go, when (it doesn't have to be in 2012) and roughly how much you want to save up and I'll add your details. It'd be lovely to have all your ideas too, we can all help each other title=Top

It'll be a 'work in progress' challenge so please bear with me while I organise links etc.

Happy New Year everyone ! Here's to 2012 title=Have

Huge thanks to Board Guide Squeaky for this , I hope you don't mind the copying and pasting to a more prominent position
Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning board, not just for the holiday that you are saving for - but for cheap/free days out so that you can give yourselves a break from hard money saving.
Also consider growing your own:- Greenfingered MoneySaving
Doing some of your own repairs:- In my home (includes DIY) MoneySaving and also see the Kindle thread - there's a free ebook on DIY available at the moment.
And if you haven't already done it: making a Statement of Affairs (not that kind ) on Debt-Free Wannabe may help you trim your bills and so add even more to your savings pot.
Then there's WHERE to save to get the best interest:- Savings & Investments and... Budgeting & Bank Accounts
All in all there aren't many boards here on MSE that won't help towards your challenge!
Here on Old Style I should think that threads such as our Monthly Grocery Challenge sticky at the top of the board, and perhaps Don't Throw Food Away Challenge 2012 will also be of help - and each of those contain links in the first post to other similar threads. So LOTS of homework there
    Good luck
  • I will join - I am looking to see if we can go to Tenerife (or somewhere similar) On Boxing day next year until New Year
Not sure of cost but I'll say Ј2000
I already have Ј200 saved and will add to it by ebaying the clutter, doing music magpie for CD's, I do some external examining which will pay Ј350, and sometimes do book reviews which give Ј40 a go. If the groceries come in under budget then the difference will go in the pot, I also save small coins so they will go in too.
    Excited
  • Hi VJsmum
    Looks like you've got a great head-start !
Tenerife for Christmas, that'll be fantastic ! A bit of winter sunshine is good for the soul . Ј40 for book reviews I'd be interested to hear about that being a bit of a bookworm.
I'll be ebaying/car booting here too once the New Year starts. DH has just got a payrise so whatever extra he gets (we won't know exactly how much until Feb payday) will be going towards the savings pot too. Equally, any overtime I do I'll pop in as well.
We've got a mega amount to save so I'll be penny pinching wherever possible. Maybe I'll join the Grocery Challenge thread again (for the umpteenth time ! )
    Excited here too
  • I'll Join in... I have saved Ј200 so far, but need Ј550 to pay for the flights to Norway in July '12 to see good friends, and we are on target and budget for get that money!
BUT, We need Ј250 for spending money... and I just don't know where we are going to get it! And I don't want to hit our savings (ISA)...!
I will also need Ј50 to get the baby a passport!!!!!
    So I need Ј850
  • Hi Julie
    Welcome
Another great head-start , I'm sure you can do the Ј850, we'll all help .
I've just joined the grocery challenge, they've got some fab ideas for getting the food bill down and how to use up things instead of throwing them away.
Also, have you got any insurances up for renewal (house/car)? You could chip a few ЈЈЈs away at those too if they are. Ebay? Car Boot sales?
  • Great idea, if my work situation pans out as I hope (keeping everything crossed here) We shall be in a situation to go away end of June.
Last year we had 4 days on the east coast, so with something similar in mind, I'd like to join in with spending money and petrol money. I normally save seperately anyway, so as not to touch "rainy day" savings, but it would be nice to keep a track with others.
So can you put me down for Ј380 with Ј26.45 saved so far
I use various methods. I squirrel away a few Ј's at the end of the week. 50p money box and Tesco clubcard vouchers / Sainsburys points.
The way I use the clubcard vouchers (the offers don't appeal to me) is spend the vouchers and Sainsburys points on normal shopping a few weeks before we go away, then keep the cash I would have spent on food.

  • Hi Linda
The East Coast is lovely ! My relatives have a caravan in Great Yarmouth and we used to visit that area regularly before we moved down south.
I've added you to the list .
Julie, you do brilliant with your groceries ! I think I'll be asking for some tips along the way .
Do you have time to do the survey sites? I used to do them before I started work again and although a bit time-consuming, I did make a few ЈЈЈs from them. Is there anything you could make in your spare time that you could sell at a car boot/local table top sales?
I would suggest growing your own veggies (we do here) but seeing as you're going away in the summer, you'd not reap the benefits very much. Things such as spinach, beetroot, cabbage could be sown over the next few weeks (in pots if you don't have space?) It might save you a little bit on your groceries
  • Ahhhh the blighters that are slugs ! As unenvironmentally friendly as they are, the only way i've conquered them is with slug pellets I'm afraid.
We don't get much wildlife in our garden, the seagulls see to that, they're scary down here ! But I do try and cover things with fleece/cloches to deter other little things from eating them.
You're definitely way ahead of me julie on the money saving techniques . Do you give lessons ? .
I'm off to work in a while, so I'll pop on later and see if we've got any more challengers.
I'm also going to set aside some time tonight to sit with a pen and paper and take some notes and try a mealplan for the first time in ages .
Thank you squeaky for the links, I've copied them to the first couple of posts, I hope you don't mind?
Have a good afternoon everyone xx
  • Oops!
I can't believe that the Meal Planning threads are not mentioned on the Grocery Challenge and, indeed, the Don't Throw Food Away one. They're an integral part of shopping well and avoiding waste!
    Sorry.
I'll edit in a mention in the new 2012 thread now.
  • I have worked it out that if I can put away Ј185.00 per month until June that will pay for our holiday in Sea Palling on the east coast.I have paid the deposit already of just under Ј700.00 and the balance is around just under Ј1300.00.My DD sees to all the food and incidental exes and my left over cash from my housekeeping purse pays for the ice creams. There are 7 of us all told, DD,her OH four boys and myself. Katie is going off to Dominican Republic with her fiancee. So far I have put the first Ј185.00 away in a seperate savings accout towards our holiday. Its a lovely thatched cottage with a nice big garden for the dogs .Two weeks by the sea, so hopefully the sun will shine on us all and we will come back brown and relaxed.Belt-tightning procedures are in place already
  • As this isn't an Old style challenge, and it's dropped down the OS board, ive moved this to the how much have you saved board
thanks and good luck with your challenge
    Zip
  • Hi, A very nice idea for a challenge. I will not be joining as only have 3 months to go before we go to Vegas so I will be spending time to research for that but I will definitely be looking at this thread with interest for our next holiday (though don't know where yet)
Good Luck and Happy New Year

  • Can I please join this? We have decided that we wouldn't be going on holiday in 2012 as we just can't afford it but I have been through our money and if we are really careful then we should be able to save Ј1500 by the beginning of July. We normally go to Butlins so we will probably do that again, Ј1500 should cover a week for 2 adults + 4 kids, travel, spending money and pet sitter.
So could you please put me down for Ј1500 by July 2012. I am a bit rubbish with money so hopefully this will give me the kick up the backside that I need!
  • Majjak i thought the same thing as you... we are using OS ways to save for our holidays. And it's OS to save before you go on holiday and not pay after
Anyway, I got my exercise bike on eBay after putting it off for months! I am getting motivated!
I told DH all about the challenge and he then spent yesterday cleaing my car in preparation of selling it once Roo is here and I no longer need it. I have a friend who's interested in it... if not I think I will just take it to the dealer (They'll give me less money BUT then I won't have to pay for the service... plus the car is more valuable to them because it has a full service history with them... good selling point!)
