A question about : Pay for hotel with prepaid card?

Hi all, We're going to spain soon and we actually pay the hotel ON ARRIVAL....should I pay for it with my euro prepaid currency card, with my debit card or my credit card??? which would be the cheapest way?? Thanks for help!title=Have

Best answers:

  • I can't see your wallet from here... which prepaid card, debit card(s) and credit card(s) do you have?
  • hi benjus, asda prepaid currency card. barclays debit and co op credit card
any advice. only know that asda do not charge for making payments abroad not even at the atm. presume barclays charge for exchange rate on the day etc. and the same with credit card. thanks for your help.
  • Prepaid card effectively charges about 1.6% by the look of it - that's the difference between the GBP/EUR rate they offer for reloading the card, and the current GBP/EUR rate. Co-op card is 2.75%, and Barclays is 2.99%.
So the prepaid card would be the cheapest.
    A couple of caveats:
  • Hotels often want to reserve funds on your card in case you use the mini-bar or something. If they want to do this, it's best to use your credit card - they may not accept prepaid cards at all for this purpose, and if they do you'll end up not being able to use all the funds you've loaded onto it.
  • There are better options available - have you already loaded the prepaid card? Would you consider getting a different card?
  • But dont let them use the pre paid card for a deposit for minibar etc etc because it will tie up available cash on the card that you may want to spend elsewhere. either decline swiping your card for things charged to your room or use a different card as deposit(security?) and payment.
  • Hi, Benjus, presume you mean another credit card? the only other
Credit card we have is a TSB and our credit ratings not very good anyway!! So we'd be better sticking (and loading) to the asda prepaid card?
  • The Aqua credit card is good for those with poor credit history and has no charges for purchases abroad - but don't use it for cash withdrawals.
The Kalixa Pay prepaid card has no charges for purchases and fixed (not %) charges for cash withdrawals.
Both of these cards are in GBP and convert to whatever currency you're spending in as you use them - so you should consider whether you prefer to lock in the exchange rate now by loading a EUR card, or leave the money in GBP until you spend it.
