A question about : Parkrun

Anyone else doing Parkruns? I love em! I am totally addicted. It's such a good feeling running with other like minded people.

Best answers:

  • It's a great idea.....it's just too early for me! 9am on a Saturday! No way jose!
  • Too far for me! I do sometimes end up near where parkrun is; but it is a tad early for me. (or late, depending on what time I'm up)
  • Done a few in Southampton but too early to do it every week. Great idea though, we have around 500 runners each week and all free.
  • Every Saturday I am about taking part. Not a weekend without a parkrun... and means cake afterwards.. not that I need an excuse.
  • I've done a few, very enjoyable and very competitive.
The 9am on a Saturday makes it a tricky one for me!
  • I love Parkrun, only started going this year but I'm addicted.
Timing is great for me as it still leaves the rest of the weekend free to do other stuff. Don't get to do much running in the evenings now its dark as I don't like going out alone in the dark and no one will run with me :-(
  • I've done three or four of the Park Runs at Andover and think they are terrific.
Some of the more hardcore devotees of athletics disparage Park Runs. I don't understand why. Maybe just a case of change is bad in the minds of some.
  • I used to run a Parkrun every week for over a year, but got injured and Also moved away so haven't been able to do one for a few years. It's great for the casual and serious runner. I used to fit it in as one of my shorter runs and loved it. I found it to be very friendly and if there was one close to me I would do it again. I run for a club and never hear a bad word about it.
  • Thanks for bringing this to my attention - I remember reading about it but I had also forgotten about it. Oh too late for today's run, perhaps next week :-)
  • I've missed my local one for the last two weeks, wasn't well, then this Saturday had to go to the school Christmas Fayre ( I know it's only mid November) so ran earlier.
I've really missed it. I heard they had over 300 runners last weekend which is incredible.
When I run with others and know I'm being timed I run faster, just can't manage the same time when I run on my own.
  • I'm thinking about it, but I've only just got to the 5K and when I checked the times I'm slower than any of the registered times. I'm not sure I fancy trailing in ages after everyone else however much I'm being cheered on towards the finish line.
Unless there's other slower runners who don't bother with being timed?
  • I used to do them in my previous city all the time, sometimes as part of marathon training long runs - run to Parkrun, do the race, then run home again. They're fantastic events with a great, supportive community and there's a very wide range of paces going on. Nobody cares if your pace is slower than others, they just recognise that you're making the effort... and with time your pace will naturally improve anyway!
Unfortunately the one where I live now isn't as accessible for me and I'm rarely off work on a Saturday.
It's worth noting that Sweatshop have free running clubs in their stores which usually start around 6/6.30pm which is better timing for some people. In all the ones I've been to, the rule in the beginners group is that nobody gets left behind. There's a back 'marker' who will always run with the slowest in the group to make sure they're okay.
  • elsien, give it a go. You might find that running with a group gives you a faster time anyway. Thats what happened to me. I was amazed at the difference.
  • Its a family event for us. Wife runs on the Saturday and the 6 yr old does the 2k on a sunday. He's setting PBs every week at the moment. Santas bringing him a nice bike for Christmas too so he can ride the 3k there.
